Always and forever. It's astonishing how real that sign-off became as the years passed. We got married and had children, just like we said we would. It's astonishing how much I still love her, after all these years. It's astonishing how she puts up with my awful jokes and breathless wonders, how she still loves me back just as much as she did when she wrote that letter. She's my one and only, and now that we're growing old, we will die together peacefully. I won't let her go without me. She lays still in the hospital bed, too still. I sit at the edge of the bed and close my fingers around hers. She awakes and squeezes my hand tighter. I smile at her with tears filling my eyes. She tells me she knows she doesn't have much time left, but she loves me and she always will. I tell her I won't let her leave without me and we both cry. I slide next to her in the bed and put my arm over her waist and breathing tubes.
Beep. Beep. Beeeeeeeeeeeee...
Always and forever.
