Waverly sat on the beach, eyes closed as she listened to sounds and felt the night breeze around her. Her webbed feet dug into the sand, enjoying the feeling of all the grains against her skin. Ever so slightly, her head turned to the side, hearing someone approaching softly. "Hello, Drac." She voiced softly, eyes opening to view the outline of the Count.
She was a Rusalka, a type of water monster not too different to mermaids, though she hated being compared to them. "Greetings, my friend." She was blind, had been since birth. It's why she was abandoned by her family after a few months of travelling the ocean world, it was easier to run and hide from sailors, pirates, or any other humans when you weren't taking care of a blind child that just didn't understand what was happening.
Somewhere along the way, after being on her own, Waverly had met a witch, a kind woman more than happy to help ease some troubles - and so, she was gifted with the magic of sight. It was different to how other monsters or humans saw, the Rusalka could only see shimmering outlines of people and objects, humans appeared in a dull orange while monsters were a brilliant, bright yellow.
Dracula appeared in yellow, outline growing stronger the closer he approached. Soon, he sat down beside her on the fallen, rotting tree trunk, and she could see him gather up his cape so it wouldn't fall into the sand. "I wanted to ask something of you, Waverly. Something very important." He spoke calmly, and she nodded, eyes closing again as her head turned back towards the ocean and moon, both she couldn't see, but knew were there.
"As you know, I am building a hotel for monsters, somewhere safe for Mavis to grow up in, and a safe haven for monsters like ourselves." She always thought he had a nice voice, good to listen to, "It will be located high on the rocks, surrounded by a lake. Difficult for humans to reach on both land and water. . . but I still have my fears-" "Always bristling with worry, Drac." She smiled, cutting him off. She heard him give a short laugh and assumed he was nodding, "I just. . . would you like to live in the hotel? Permanently? I want you to be a backup measure to ensure humans don't find the hotel through the water."
Waverly sat up a bit, making a sound of surprise, "Me? Drac. . . I. . . You and the others saved me from hunters, I don't think I could-" Suddenly her hand was picked up from where it rested on the wood, into a cold hand, "I couldn't think of anyone else I trust more to help the hotel." Her worries calmed at his reassurance, and she nodded, "I'd love to help."
She owes Count Dracula so much, both himself and the rest of their friend group, so helping protect the hotel, helping protect his daughter, was possibly the best way for her to show her gratitude.
Dracula's smile grew, though she was unaware as he let go of her hand, standing up and letting his cape drop around him, "Thank you, Waverly. You don't know how much this means to me. . . To Martha. . ."
