"Up, now," My moms voice rings from outside my door. I open my eyes slightly. "Now Poppy we don't have time for this!" I shift in my blanket and sit up. My eyes gaze to the clock, it's three in the morning.
"What's happening?" I breathe out and move my blanket off of me. "Mom?" I call to the door. My voice sounds coarse.
"Now poppy theyre coming!" I rub my eyes and stand. I look down at my Cookie Monster pants and coffee stained white tank top.
"Can I change?" I ask, still a little out of it.
"No! Come on!" She sounds panicked. I go to the door and open it. Cold air hits my body like a weapon. I shift my eyes to the door, or where the door used to be. Theres now just a giant hole. I feel my eyes widen.
"What the fuck.." My mom grabs my arm and yanks me towards the giant hole.
"We tried poppy, we tried to keep you hidden for as long as possible. But they found us, Norman is holding them back. Get to the car, come on now," she grips my arm harder. I stop walking, making her almost fall back.
"Can you explain what is happening? One minute I'm having a dream about a horse man and the next our house was like exploded?" I shake her hand from my arm. My mom stares at me.
"We can't stay here anymore Poppy, please," this is the most urgent I've ever heard her. My mom normally has a steady and strong demeanor, she kind has to be because of her job as a hypno therapist. I hear a loud bang and duck my head as something flys through the house. "Now poppy!" She screams and grabs my arm again, we run out of the house. We run to the minivan parked in the driveway. As I'm about to get in, I hear deep gravely voices.
"Someone broke in huh?" I whisper and slip into the van. My mom starts the car and speeds away from the house. "Did Norman call the police? Or is that where we're going?" I ask my mom, shifting in my seat. I feel my pants pockets, my phone isn't there. "I left my phone."
"Technically yes someone broke in," She takes a sharp left that makes my body press into the passenger side door. "Police can't help us, not with this," I hold on to the door as she speeds down the road. "You don't need your phone."
"Why can't the police help? Are they that dangerous?" I ease up on the door. I watch my mom look in the rear view mirror.
"Shit," she yells and starts to drive faster. "Please for the love of god, help us." I furrow my brows and look behind us. I see motorcycles coming towards us, flying motorcycles.
"Oh look they're flying," I laugh then pause. "THEY'RE FLYING? Mom what the fuck is that?" I scream, seeing a giant shadow moving towards our car.
"It's now or never Hypnos!" My mom yells in response.
"Mom!" I yell over her. "I'm going to pass out.." I feel my chest tighten. "What are those things? This is a dream. I'm going to wake up. That's all this is. A weird dream," I shut my eyes and pinch my arm. I open my eyes and see a giant sign that says "WELCOME TO NEW YORK".
"Thank you darling," my mom whispers.
"Margo Garcia Dennis what the hell is going on? How the hell are we in New York? Why were those guys.." I turn swiftly to look behind us. Nothing but an empty highway. I turn back to the front. "I'm still dreaming," I shut my eyes and pinch myself harder.
"You aren't dreaming Poppy," I feel the car slow down. I ignore her. I pinch myself once more and open my eyes. Still the highway.
"If I'm not dreaming, am I dead? Did we die? Men can't fly- especially on motorcycles.." I whisper.
"You're right, men can't fly," My mom takes an exit and comes to a stop at a red light. "But Furies can," she glances to me. I stare at her.
"Youre speaking a different language right now. I know I'm dyslexic but I understand nothing you're saying and quite honestly I'm too freaked out to try and understand," I sink down into my seat and process everything that happened in the last thirty minutes.
