Chapter One
“Jaslyn are you excited dear?” My mother asked as she brought me my favorite, blueberry pancakes with pure maple syrup poured all over them. It was my sixteenth birthday and although already special for some people it was extra special for me because my magic would finally be able to be tapped into, meaning I would finally be able to save my people from the Purus'.
“Of course mother, thank you for these by the way.” I smiled at her as she pushed a strand of dark hair from her tan face. I tried not to look at her too much though because sometimes her dark features and sharp teeth in contrast to my own pale skin and light blonde hair would send a feeling of dread through me that I couldn't quite understand.
“No problem dear, now remember you must say that spell I taught you at exactly 7:00 pm, don't forget it or terrifying things will happen, you understand?” She asked, a dark shadow forming beneath her feautures. I nodded my head as I picked at my pancakes, the hunger in my stomach being replaced by anxiety and I didn't even know why.
“You are rare my love, happy birthday.” She left the large, gothic bedroom and I could hear her footsteps as she walked down the hall. Placing my pancakes on the bedside table I sighed, trying to combat the curious thoughts that were bombarding my mind knowing that curiosity could cause nothing but trouble. I knew I was doing the right thing for my people, for everyone. I would be putting the world into balance once again but although I kept telling myself all of these wonderful things everything just felt so wrong.
“May I come in?” A low voice outside of my door exclaimed jolting me out of my thoughts. I walked over to the door, opening it slowly. Standing outside was Liam, my best friend and the only other person in the world it seemed that looked like me. He ran a hand through his light brown hair, a forced smile on his boyishly handsome face as he pushed past me and plopped down onto my large bed.
“Happy birthday Jas.” Liam said as he looked around nervously, as though he was expecting someone to pop out of my closet and arrest him for coming into my room.
“What's wrong with you?” I asked casually as I shut my large, metal door and walked over to him, plopping down onto the stiff mattress.
“If I tell you something, you have to believe me.” He whispered, nearly inaudibly and I could feel the confusion and anxiety build up into me like dynamite and knew it was only a matter of time before I exploded.
“You can tell me anything Liam, you know that.” I answered nervously as I pushed the light blonde curls out of my eyes and looked straight into his. They were different, usually they were a very light green but now they were darker, those of which held many secrets. Secrets that I wasn't sure I wanted to know.
He let out a loud sigh before whispering, “You can't say the spell Jas.” I looked at him, confusion clear on my face as I tried to decipher where exactly this was coming from. Or for that matter, how he even knew about the spell to begin with, no one knew except for me, my mother and a couple of other members of the higher council.
“How do you know that?” I whispered as he sighed loudly and threw his head into his hands.
“It doesn't matter how I know, all that matters is that I know and if you say the spell you'll unleash it. You have to believe me Jas, don't say it please.” I could feel the dread stirring deep in my stomach as he uttered those words and I tried to ignore it as I shook my head gently.
“I'm doing it to save everyone, that you should know and what do you mean unleash it, unleash what? Did you hit your head before coming here because I can get you a nurse Liam.” I said, my tone soft as I touched his forehead lightly. He angrily pushed my hand away,a dangerous look in his eyes as he stood up and paced the room like a madman.
“I haven't hit my head, apparently you must have, if you don't remember!” Liam nearly screamed, frustration coating his deep voice as he walked over to me and shook my shoulders violently, shocking me into silence.
“You say that spell and you unleash darkness. Once you unleash darkness the world falls into complete chaos, don't you understand,Rarity?” Liam whispered gently, as he looked at me, his face softer then before, more understanding.
“My mother would never have me unleash darkness, we're doing this to save the world, put it into perfect alignment, saveour people...and what did you just call me?” I whispered back, the shock wearing off as I tried to will Liam into understanding me, so he would tell me it was all a misunderstanding, but I knew better. Liam was as stubborn, and apparently crazy now as they come.
“Your right, your mother would never have you do something as heinous as that, your mother would never let you kill millions of people and evoke worldwide terror into the populace. Your mother would never create a nightmare.” He looked at me hard, unblinking as I nodded my head in confused agreement.
“Then what are you going on about Liam, why did you even come here with your nonsense, on my birthday of all days!”
“I said your mother would never do that to millions of people.” Liam answered.
I shook my head in confusion, frustration coating my voice. “Well she is my mother so that means she wouldn't ever do anything like that. What in the world is wrong with you today?”
“Except she's not.” And with those three words, my life was changed forever.
