I look at her discreetly, my pen in my mouth. In my head I sing "Hey There Delilah" as I stare at her back. She taps her pen against her leg and doesn't look back at me, even though I keep wishing her to. My stomach becomes a butterfly migration as she slowly answers what the teacher asks. I can't help but to be relaxed by her voice, so tremendously beautiful. Her almond colored skin shines as the slight light that comes from the window hits her face. Her brown honey eyes glint in the sunlight, and I suppress a small sigh that wants to escape my mouth. After some time of constant staring, I get back to reality, and jump up a little, my gaze redirected to the window. I watch the people going on with their day, crossing the street, going in nearby stores, buying little things at the small stall on the corner of the street, et cetera. Suddenly, a voice interrupts my daydream.
"Olivia! Olivia!"
I turn my head to the voice and wait for a second for my eyes to focus on the person talking.
"Oliiiviaaa to eaaaaaaarthhh" Dania says, snapping her fingers in front of my face.
I look at her questioningly, and she sighs.
"Olivia! Time to go home!"
Oh. The school day is over. I nod and start putting my stuff in my backpack when she tugs on my sleeve.
"What?" I turn to her, grabbing my pencils from my desk.
"Wanna come eat at my house today?"
"Sure" I shrug.
"Yay!"
She jumps up from her seat and starts talking as fast as humanly possible, but I just look over at Delilah and watch her as she grabs her backpack and goes out the classroom door. Finally, I sigh. Dania looks at me judgingly and pokes me in the arm.
"Seriously, Olivia. Stop simping so much!" she says, laughing a little.
I laugh half-heartedly, but she doesn't notice and resumes rambling about what to do on the weekend. We leave school and head to Dania's house, stopping by the convenience store to buy some sodas and candy. I open my gummies and nibble on the head of a green bear, when Dania tugs on my sleeve again.
"Huh?" I say.
"Where you tuning me out again? I asked if you wanted to go to the movies or just watch a movie at my house."
"Oh," I shrug "I actually prefer a movie at your house. I'm pretty tired."
She nods, but doesn't let go of me and instead links her arm with mine. I look at our arms with a bit of surprise, but don't pull away. She looks at me and lowers her smile a little.
"Oh. I'm sorry. Too touchy, right?" she slips her arm away and continues walking like nothing happened.
I catch up to her and walk by her side, my eyes dropping to my sneakers, hearing her talk about what she did last weekend with her boyfriend, Jack Williams, Junior at our school, Johnson High School. By the time we get to Dania's house, my stomach is rumbling and my feet hurt. Her house is a lot farther from the school than mine, so I'm not used to walking all the way there. We take off our shoes at the door, and soundlessly walk to her kitchen, where Jessy, Dania's mom, is making supper. Dania kisses Jessy's cheek, and grabs some chips for the both of us. We head to her room, greeting Danny (Dania's brother), playing on his x-box, on the way. I tumble on Dania's bed and sigh. God, her bed is so comfortable. She sees me from the side and chuckles.
"Ready for sleep?"
I look at her upside down and smile.
"Nnng I'm hungryyyyy," I grab some chips and munch on them, looking up at Dania "what'chu doing?"
"Oh, I'm putting on some music, whad'ya want to hear?"
"Oooohhhh," I rack my brain "hmmmm how about some Mother Mother?"
She smiles and puts a playlist of hers. I groan
"This isn't Mother Mother!"
"I know I know, but I made a playlist for you, so, y'know!"
"Why'd you ask me for music then?"
"A little bet with myself. I thought it'd be Girl in Red, so I kinda lost."
"But to yourself."
"Yeah. I guess I could pay by eating some chips," she says, looking hungrily at the chips, grabbing a handful "My mom finally bought some snacks. About time!"
I stare at her and burst out laughing. She looks at me accusingly.
"Hey! Don't laugh! I was depressed because of that!"
I clutch my stomach and double over. She starts laughing to and pokes me in the arm.
"Stop! Stoppp!!"
"Okay! Okay!" I say, breathlessly, holding my stomach.
She chuckles and shakes her head and throws herself on the bed beside me, looking at my upside-down face.
"Soooo,-" she starts, but I put a hand on her mouth.
"No! We're not doing this again!"
She licks my hand on her mouth and I pull it away, shaking it.
"Ewwwwwwwww"
"Your fault. AAAAAnyways, as I was saying before you rudely cut me off, I want to know about her!! Tell me about her!"
I groan and shake my head.
"Come oooonnnn" she pleads, shaking my shoulders back and forth.
I get her hands off me and stare at her with laziness. She smiles and nods. I sigh. I'm definitely not getting out of this, so I sit up, and she sits up in front of me, with an expectant look on her face.
"Okay. So, I just think she's really pretty," my face flushes and I quickly add "Of course, I think she's really great and kind too. And- and I wish she would think the same for me because I'll probably die if she sees me as only a friend. When she looks or even talks to me I just- freeze. I don't know what to do, Daniaaaaa."
Her eyes soften and she smiles. Then, the smile turns a little mischievous and I don't know what she's going to say until it hits me straight in the face.
"That is so sweet. People should def learn from you."
I look at her with exasperation and throw a pillow at her, my heart dropping a hundred miles. She was my last hope at getting some kind of advice or direction.
"Hey, Olivia?"
I turn to her and put up a smile, trying not to break down there and then.
"I think you should tell her. Really."
I look at her with a weird look on my face.
"What the fuck is happening to you."
She laughs and hides her face in her hands.
"I dunno I just want you to be happy, y'know?"
I hear an edge in her voice, but don't really focus on it. Lots of thoughts are running through my mind and I can barely focus on the specifics of my surroundings. Should I? Should I really? I'd ruin everything! WHAT?! But we don't even have anything! I feel Dania's eyes on me, half-smiling.
"I can feel even from here your anxiety" she smirks.
I look at her, her blue-greenish eyes observing me. I shudder.
"You're creepy, you know?"
"Oh yeah."
