"A mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." -John Milton
I heard a scream. But I never opened my mouth.
I heard bones crushing. But I felt no pain.
I still don't know what happened.
As the smoke cleared, I saw nothing but the front bumper of a car inches from my nose. In fact, the entire front of the car had been crunched into itself, barely missing my body. It never touched me. I sat there, not knowing what to do. How did a 2 ton SUV get folded like a piece of paper, just to avoid hitting me?! I heard groaning from the car. Oh no. The driver! I sprang to my feet and leaned into the driver's window. His legs were caught under the bent metal.
Guilt swept over me. Was this my fault?! Panic set in and I began to hyperventilate. Oh god what am I going to do?! I began pacing back and forth. Call the cops?! No, they'd suspect me. I heard the sound of metal crunching again. What? I turned back to the car and saw that it was unbending, releasing his legs. WHAT THE HELL?! HOW DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?!
Run. That was my first instinct. so I grabbed my stuff. And ran.
I ran past my house and straight to my friend's.
"Randy! Open up!" I banged on the door, breathing heavily.
"Jules?" I heard his soft voice from inside the house. I heard the door unlatch and I mentally relaxed.
"Hey." I smiled as the Hispanic boy walked out.
"Hey!" He grinned, flashing his white teeth. He wasn't fully Hispanic, his dad moved here from Mexico and married an American, Randy's mom.
I'm not going to lie to you. Randy is definitely not ugly. His muscles pressed against his shirt, outlining his toned body. He played soccer, so he was always in good shape. His black hair was always messy, yet perfect.
"Why are you here?" He asked.
"Oh, um... It was my dad again." I admitted. His expression softened immediately. He was the only one who knew how my dad really treated me...
"You can stay here." He opened the door all the way and I stepped into his house. I knew his house almost better than I know my own. I stay here so often that I even have a change of clothes, besides the one in my bag, in the guest room!
"Thanks..." I smiled.
"You look like you just ran a marathon." He chuckled.
"Yeah, I feel like I did too..." For some reason I felt that all the energy in my body was drained.
"I'm going to go take a shower..." I muttered. "Have Orphan in the dvd player by the time I'm out!" I chuckled as I ran upstairs.
I turned on the shower and sighed. So tired...
After I took my shower, I pulled on a tank top and sweatpants. I put my stuff in the guest room and went back downstairs. I smelt the familiar smell of enchiladas coming from the kitchen.
Let me tell you something. Randy's dad makes the best- i mean THE best- enchiladas. A traditional recipe from Mexico...
"Hola, Juliet!" Randy's dad greeted me as I walked into the kitchen.
"Papa! You know she doesn't like to be called that!" Randy glared at his dad.
"No, it's okay!" I assured his dad. He smiled in return.
"So, will you be staying the night again?" He asked. I nodded.
"As long as you're in separate rooms!" Randy's mom chimed as she entered the room.
Randy's face grew a faint pink... Aww he was blushing!
"Moooom!" He pouted in embarrassment. I don't care how hot he was, that pout made him adorable. I chuckled and patted his head.
"Baby, you know I was kidding!" She planted a kiss on his forehead and kissed Mr. Hernandez, that was Randy's last name, on the cheek. Lastly, she engulfed me in a loving hug.
Just like my mom used too.
It was really amazing how Randy's family sort of was my own family, too... I felt loved in this house...
"Well, Jules it's okay with me that you spend the night!" His mom kissed my forehead as if I was her daughter. I might as well be, since I'm over here so much.
"Well, time for dinner!" Mr. Hernandez smiled as he set the steaming food on the table. We all sat around the table and I took Randy's hand in mine and his mom's hand in my other.
This was my favorite part.
Grace.
I never say grace at my house. Ever since my mom died, my dad gave up on God all together. This one moment of prayer, together, as a family, made me feel so included and loved.
After grace, we handed out the food. I still couldn't stop thinking about earlier today... How did that car bend so easily? Through the entire meal I pondered, until my name was spoken.
"So, Jules. I hear your grades have really improved!" Mrs. Hernandez smiles warmly at me.
"Yeah, ever since your son started tutoring me in math!" I chuckled. Never was good at math...
"Well, I think you would make a fine daughter in law." She winked and went back to her food. I laughed as Randy's face reddened.
"Thanks for dinner, Mr. Hernandez!" I smiled.
"Please, call me Papa." He insisted.
"Well, thank you Papa." I grinned.
"come on jules! Up in my room Orphan is waiting in the dvd player!" Randy called, bounding up the stairs. I ran after him and smiled when I saw he was already sitting on his bed. I crawled in and sat next to him, curling up and sinking in to the usual warmth of his chest.
Don't get any ideas. We're just friend... For now. Heh... Anyway...
About an hour into the movie, I felt Randy's breathing slow down and become soft an steady.
He was asleep... He was so peaceful. In fact, I began to drift off.
However, before I closed my eyes, the tv switched off out of nowhere.
The tv hadn't been touched.
The remote hadn't been touched.
