Creds for idea: @LuciusMalfoyIsADilf
(muah ily amber ty)
——————————————————————————Couples waltzed past you and Cedric in their dresses and suits as you danced together, the elegant symphony of violins and pianos ringing through your ears. Of course you and Cedric only came to the Yule Ball as friends. Nothing more. You were both simply in need of a date and decided to go together. And although you hated to admit it, you wished you went as more.
"Y/n stop stepping on my toes." He laughed, leading your dance to the beat of the music.
"What ever do you mean, Ceddy?" You fluttered your eyelashes, feigning innocence as you stepped on his toes once more.
He laughed again, shaking his head slightly this time. "You're such an ass."
He wasn't wrong, however you couldn't help but do something in an attempt to annoy him, because, number one, that was your relationship dynamic. The two of you did small, meaningless things to get underneath each other's skin all the time. And number two, you liked the mischievous look he got in his eyes that always let you know he was planning a way to get you back for whatever you did.
"You love me anyways." You looked up at him as a subtle blush crept across his cheeks.
"You have no idea." Before you could respond to what he had just said, Cedric lifted your arm up and twirled you around, your dress swishing along in a circle with you.
At first, you wondered wether you heard him right, but as the night went on, you completely forgot about what he said. You were too wrapped up in how happy you felt at any given moment to remember it.
Nonetheless, the two of you danced and talked for hours. By the time Cedric left to get you some punch, most of the other couples had already gone back to their dorms.
"Here you go, darling." Cedric approached you with two cups in his hands, handing one of them to you.
"Thank you, Ced. And hey, I'm really glad we decided to come here together. It was fun." You smiled at him, bringing the cup to your lips.
"I had a lot of fun too. And I don't know if I've already told you this, but you look gorgeous tonight. Truly."
Your heart fluttered. Of course he'd already told you how beautiful you looked. Probably at least seventeen times, but it still caused a swarm of butterflies to erupt in your stomach.
"Thanks. You don't look half bad yourself." You giggled, nudging his arm. Which was true, Cedric in dress robes had quite the effect on you.
"You know, I've been wondering why you turned down all the other people that asked you to the ball," He said in what sounded like a forced tone of playfulness. "I mean, you could've had a real date instead of going with me." He leaned against the wall, gaze moving to fix upon his shoes.
"I dunno." You shrugged. "I guess I was just waiting for the right person to ask me." And he did. He was standing right next to you. Although, he was only standing next to you as a friend.
"And that special someone never asked you?" He looked up from his shoes, now holding intense eye contact with you.
You took another sip of your punch in an attempt to buy yourself more time to come up with an answer. Your heart began to race as the liquid slid down your throat much faster than you would've liked. You had to think fast.
"No. Your dad wasn't available, unfortunately."
You didn't know where that came from but at least you didn't say "Yeah, the guy I'm in love with did actually ask me to the Yule Ball. He's you. You're kind of dense, Cedric. I've liked you since second year."
