I took a last look out the window to see the crystal blue waters of Australia as our plane flew up into the air. A gentle hand fell on my knee as I glance over to see my older sister Kylie giving me a reassuring look. She gave my knee a light squeeze and looked over at the window only to let out a sigh.
"We grew up here," Kylie slowly said as she bit her lip. "It's like we're becoming completely new people, as if we're starting over again."
I looked out the window for the last time and finally decided enough was enough and closed the shade of the window. I leaned back into my seat. This was going to be a long flight. I reached into my purse to pull out my iPod. I grabbed the two ear buds and started to de-tangle the chord as I looked up to see the flight attendant walking down the isle.
"Excuse me?" I asked, sounding a little nervous.
"Yes?" she replied, turning to face me.
"When will we be arriving at Heathrow?"
"In about 17 hours" she said, sealing her statement with a smile.
I silently nodded and she continued her way down the plane. I adjusted myself once again and popped both ear buds in my ear. Slowly going through my playlist, I chose to listen to Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran. The music flooded my mind and I started to calm down. It was like the adrenaline in my body was being flushed away by his angelic voice.
I started to think about what I'm leaving back home in Launceston, Tasmania. My family and I were very close. It consisted of me, Kylie, my mother, and my step father. My parents split when I was young, probably around the age of 3 or 4. I rarely ever saw my father, he wasn't a present figure in my life as I grew up. My mother married my step father when I was 8 years old, he's the one who raised me like his own daughter. Kylie and I had a decent life. We were always known as the sisters who were as close as two peas in a pod. I smiled at this thought, no one had the relationship that Kyles and I shared. It was irreplaceable. Ever since elementary school, you really couldn't get one without the other. We're a packaged deal. I was always the smart one in school, I skipped 2 grades and that's how Kylie and I are in the same grade. In high school, I guess you could consider us as the popular girls. We had many friends and our family knew everyone in town. Our town didn't really keep secrets either. If something happened, the whole town would know about it in as little as 2 days. When they found out we were accepted into the University of London, a going away party was thrown for us. All of my friends were there, pretty much the whole town. I had just turned 17 in May and now I'm off to a different country for college. I took a moment to actually digest that thought. Another country for college. I shook my head in disbelief, was this really happening? I looked down at my wrist to check the time, 13 more hours to go and I'll be in my new home.
I started to get anxious again to I decided to play with the monitor in front of me and skimmed through all of the movies. I stopped to see one of the favorites on the screen, Grease. I took out my ear buds and wrapped them around my iPod and stuck it back into my purse. I pressed play and all of my focus went into the movie. That was until Kylie tapped my shoulder.
"Charlie?" she asked.
"Yeah?" I looked over at her to see a frown on her face.
"I miss him..." she said, her voice trailing off into a whisper.
Him. She said it trying to hold back the tears. Kylie was 19, 2 years older than me. During our junior year in high school, she met a boy named Adam, Adam Gordon. He was the star baseball player, the smart one, the kind one, the handsome one, the one that all of the girls at our school were crazy over. He had asked Kylie to prom and that's when they started dating. Ever since, they were inseparable. They did everything together. In fact, he was over at our home so much we already started to consider him as a part of the family. Sounds crazy, but you could tell they were in love. They were voted Mr. and Mrs. Kensington High. They were the ideal couple, the relationship that everyone longed for.
