We Meet

It had been a rough week for you. You’ve always been bad at talking to people and your new customer service job was making you crazy. And since you moved to Florida a few months ago, you haven’t managed to make any friends. There are plenty of people at work, but they all seem to have their own friends and no interest in you. You’ve always been an outcast and nothing has changed, even after starting a new life in a new place.

You looked outside your dusty window to see that it was drizzling outside. The small neighborhood you moved into was old but cute. There were rows and rows of single story homes, tropical flowers and palm trees lining the cracked streets. You bought the cheapest home you could find, but it was surprisingly alright. Of course, it was a fixer upper on the inside, but it had good structural integrity nevertheless.

Since the rain was letting up, you decided to go out to your car, which was parked on the side of the street by your house. It was an older model Miata convertible, but it was fun to drive around on nice days. You were going to drive to the store for some liquor. You worked hard all week and wanted to have a drink while watching the sun set. You walked down the narrow path if your front yard, out to the sidewalk, and opened your car door. You sat down, turned your car on, and realized you left your wallet inside.

As you ran to your door, you realized that your keys were in the car. You rushed back to your car, but the door did not open. Realizing your phone and keys were locked in your car and that you knew nobody around who could help, the feelings of aloneness and pressure to succeed that you’ve been ignoring crept up on you. Tears mixed with the rain as you collapsed on the sidewalk. You tried so hard, but it felt like nothing could go your way. You pulled once more at your door handle, but the door didn’t budge.

You sat there with your eyes closed, suddenly feeling dizzy. Your heartrate had gone up and your limbs were numb. Your vision was blurry and tears were running down your cheeks. Your head spun and the rain had saturated you. You closed your eyes again and tried to clear your mind.

   “You ok?”

You opened your eyes. It was blurry.

   “Dude… You good?”

You looked up to see a woman with glistening emerald eyes staring back down at you. The sky was clear and turning shades of orange and pink behind her. You must have passed out for a while. “Sorry, yeah”

“Do you mind if I ask why you’re sitting here? And your car’s gonna run out of gas if you don’t shut it off.” She reached a hand down to you. You noticed a colorful tattoo of a butterfly and dagger on her muscled forearm.

“Oh, I’m locked out of my car. And my house.” You took her hand and she lifted you to your feet with a swift pull.

“That doesn’t explain why you were passed out on the ground, but ok. Do you want me to open up your car?”

You wondered how this girl was going to get your car open, then guessed she must be some sort of criminal. But she felt safe to be around. The words slipped out of your mouth before you could make a better judgement. “Yes, please!”

“Ok, but I’m gonna need a minute. My friend’s got a slim jim, shes just a couple blocks down. Come on.” She smiled. “I’m Jolyne, by the way.”

You turned to walk with her and suddenly felt dizzy. As you were about to fall, she grabbed your shoulder and steadied you. “Sorry, I haven’t eaten today.” you told her, embarrassed that you almost crashed to the ground.
Jolyne gently locked your hand with hers and you began walking down the street. You blushed at the gesture and looked over to see how cute she really was. It felt nice to hold somebody’s hand, especially someone so pretty. “I’m (y/n), by the way.”
