Lips of an Angel

A sharp sound cuts through the dark. 

Riiing! Riiing! Riiing!

 Kevin tries hard to ignore it. But the damned phone is persistent - won’t let him sleep. 

Riiing! Riiing! Rii-“What?!” He snaps at the caller.

“K-Kevin…” A voice sobs into the receiver.  He immediately regrets his harsh tone. This voice is one he hasn’t heard from in five months. 

“Double D?”

Honey why you calling me,
So late?
It’s kinda hard to talk right now…

Naz sleeps in the bed next to him. Unaware and breathing evenly, which is what he needs right now.

“Oh, jeez, hang on a sec.”

 “Okay..” The sock head whimpered through the phone. Slowly, carefully, Kevin crept out of bed and into the living room of his apartment, shutting the bedroom door behind him as he went.  

Honey, why you cryin’Is everything okay?
I gotta whisper ‘cause I can’t be too loud…

“Double D… What’s wrong?” He murmured. 

“K-Kevin, I-I… I…” Edd just cried harder, but Kevin could tell he was trying to muffle the cries. Probably trying not to wake the other Ed’s; he knew the raven-haired male shared an apartment with them. 

“Hey, hey, it’s okay. It’s alright, Edd. Just talk when you’re ready.” He knew that the other needed encouragement. Kevin was willing to wait patiently. 

Edd sighed. Got his breathing under control. And spoke again.

“Kevin.” That voice… “It’s just.. I don’t know… I apologize for waking you at such an inconvenient hour such as this. And if I interrupted your sleep.”

“No, it’s cool. Was there something you needed?” He missed Edd.

“Well… I-I guess… I guess that I just m-miss you.” The smaller male breathed. Kevin’s heartbeat pulsed in his chest, and longing swept over him. Memories came flooding back, and each one pierced his heart. He and Edd had once had a relationship. A secret one, and though each loved the other very much, keeping their relationship hidden had made them argue and fight. One day the arguments just got to be too much, and the pair had split. For about three months, they each sulked, casting longing and remorseful looks at the other when they thought no one was watching. After graduation, Kevin somehow thought Double D had forgotten about him and moved on. So he did the same, and got with Naz. 

Well, my girl’s in the next room,
Sometimes I wish she was you,
I guess we never really moved on…

The truth was, Kevin had never gotten over Edd. When he kissed Nazz, he felt Edd's lips against his. Hugs and holding hands with her never was hugging her or holding hands with her because all he ever thought about was Edd. With each passing day, he grew more and more angry with himself. Why had he let Double D go?Edd had never truly gotten over Kevin, either. In the apartment that he rented with the other Ed’s, he mourned leaving the redhead every time the memory of the jock passed through his mind. Why had he let himself leave?

It’s really good to hear your voice,
Saying my name,
it sounds so sweet,
Coming from the lips of an angel,
Hearing those words it makes me weak…
