"David! I came as soon as I could!" I shouted as I got out of my vehicle. He was sitting out on the front porch, his head in his hands. Running over to him, I placed my hand on his shoulder and sat beside him. "They said he's got a few hours left. If he's not gone by then." His tone was solemn and I could feel his pain. "I'm so sorry... Has the rest of your family shown up yet?" I asked softly. This seemed to anger him. "Yes, everyone except for fucking Javier. My dad keeps asking for him too."

Frowning, I pull my hand away and he looks at me. "Hope Javi gets here in time..." I say out loud. He scoffs and turns away. "He's probably slumming it somewhere. Too busy to care about his own father— or family, for that matter." His words didn't register with me well. I know for a fact Javier cares a lot about his family, I'm sad to see David doesn't believe it. Facing him, I can tell he's angry. "Whatever happens, I'm here for you and your family, okay? You guys are all I have." David intense gaze wears off as he looks at me with a soft expression.

"Gracias, princesa." A laugh escapes and I find David smiling back at me. "You're still calling me that after all these years?" I ask. David answers me with playfulness on his face. "Of course, I remembered how much you loved being called that. Princesa [Name] and Prince Javier." His voice drips with sarcasm as he mentions Javier. My face felt hot as I looked away in embarrassment. "It was stupid kid stuff. I'm sure you didn't exactly like being el dragón?" David laughs finally and my embarrassment dissipates. "No. It just means I can steal you away." There's a hint of seriousness in his voice that throws me off but his smile reassures me. "I think that role is reserved for Kate, no?"

His playfulness is gone, suddenly replaced by frustration. The moment is over and David doesn't answer me as he stands. "Is something wrong?" I ask cautiously. He sighs and looks back at me. "It's just... things with me and Kate have been difficult lately. I keep asking myself, 'Is it because I'm a bad husband? A bad father?' and sometimes I just wish things had gone differently. Maybe I still have a chance at what I want in life, maybe not." David sighs and I can tell he's lost in thought. "Don't beat yourself up. You're a good person, aside from your temper tantrum's, time to time." I offer with a smile. He appears to be less upset as he sits back beside me. "You know, you're the only person who I can't get mad at. Even when you're making fun of me, chica. It frustrates me sometimes."

I side eye him as he opens a beer. "I guess that's a good thing though. I wouldn't wanna get into fights like you and Javi do." He drinks half the can and glances at me with an unreadable expression. "Wouldn't want to ruin your face, princesa." Before I could respond or chastise him for calling me that, Mariana comes out and sees us. "[Name]! You came!" The little girl shouts as she runs over to me, engulfing me into a hug. "Of course, Mari. You have to be there for family." I hear David scoff again, probably thinking about his own brother. He stands up and looks down at us. "She's right, Mariana. Wish your uncle was the same. Family's all that matters." With that, he steps inside and Mariana looks back at me with a sad face. "Uncle Javi isn't coming?" I kneel down beside her and try to comfort her. "I'm sure he'll come." 'I just hope it's soon enough.'
