Jungkook's POV

"My goodness. It was just a suggestion."
Y/N sighed and rolled her eyes at me one more time.
"A stupid one.", I scoffed, pacing back and forth in front of her since I was about to lose my mind about this.
"My bad. Let's change the subject then."
"No! We can't just pretend like that didn't just happen.", I emphasized and turned my head to look at her in disbelief.
Y/N calmly leaned back on my bed, rested her upper body on her arms and rubbed her lips together while staring back at me.
"I'm not pretending that this didn't just happen, but what do you want me to do? Cry about it? Lash out? That's insane. You don't want to be in a relationship with me? Okay. I can live with that. Let's move on."
Her small shrug was by far what triggered me most.
"How can you just shrug it off like that?"
"Having a boyfriend is not a goal of mine nor a priority in life. It's just a cherry on top. Surely nice, but most definitely not a necessity. Not having one won't be the death of me and it shouldn't ruin our friendship. Now problem three, please."
Her explanation gave me chills and kind of upset me to some extent, but I didn't let it show.
"You sure about that?", I questioned.
"Yeah. Unless you're still at a different equation."
"I meant the boyfriend thing."
Y/N pursed her lips and nodded nonchalantly.
"Absolutely. I've liked you for quite a while now and as nice as it would be to have you as my boyfriend, I'm fine with just being friends with you. Can we discuss the third equation now?"
"Y-You've liked me for quite a-a while?", I repeated in shock, my eyes widened to the point that I felt like they were about to pop out of my head.
"You're surprised."
Y/N looked as if she had expected me to be a mind-reader all this time.
"Yes!"
"Well, in that case, we definitely shouldn't be discussing this right now.", she huffed and sat up as she gave me another eye roll.
I furrowed my brows in confusion and ran a hand through my hair to calm down a little.
"I don't understand."
My best friend of several years suddenly confessing to be in love with me and asking to be in a relationship with me came as much as a surprise as some astrologist saying the earth would be hit by a huge meteor in ten minutes. Never in a million years would I have expected this to happen, especially not in the way she brought it up-while doing our homework.
Y/N was by far one of the coolest people I knew and she just wasn't the type to be crazy emotional. That she even wanted a relationship in the first place was surprising in and of itself. I always rather considered her a one night stand kind of person. Not in a bad way, just in a not-ever-settling-down and no-fan-of-commitment way.
Y/N was truly amazing and definitely my favorite person to be around, but thinking about her in a romantic way felt weird. We shared everything with each other, our best and worst days. That was what had eliminated any kind of romantic chemistry in my head so far.
Our friendship was very precious to me and I wouldn't sacrifice it for anything in the world. Her having a crush on me really didn't go well with that. Things were great the way they were and I wanted them to stay like that. Just chill and comfy.
"If you haven't noticed anything up until now, then there's truly nothing to freak out about. To you it didn't affect our friendship up until now and that doesn't have to change-unless you want it to.", Y/N remarked and just continued doing her homework like nothing happened.
"And that's it? You drop a bomb like that and don't want to know about its impact?"
"You don't want it in your arsenal, so whether you let it detonate and blow everything up is on you. My plane is on a new mission to determine x now. Care to help?"
Her tone indicated that she was starting to get a bit annoyed. By the homework as I hoped. However, I was getting a bit irritated as well. The way she was keeping the discussion at a halt didn't sit right with me.
"But what about the one you bombed?"
She repeatedly tapped the back of her pen on the paper as if that would help her find the solution.
"The bomb was in plain sight for a long time and he didn't notice. It won't detonate without a trigger. The circumstances didn't change, only his perception of them. His awareness is the significant variable here; the potential trigger. If he doesn't pull it, life can go on as before. So is he going to help with the third equation now?"
She turned her head to me with her question and raised her brows expectantly. I joined my brows, leaned forward a bit and looked at her in disbelief.
"But...it's a bomb."
Y/N responded with a blank stare.
"It's a metaphor."
"I can't believe how cool you are about this.", I mumbled while lightly shaking my head and cautiously crossed my arms in front of my chest as I eyed her up and down.
She just returned to writing into her notebook and then let out a sigh.
"Even though I hoped otherwise, I prepared myself for a rejection just as much as an acceptance. It was a 50:50 chance. My life is not going to end just because you said no. And I'll figure out the third problem on my own as well."
Her eyes had a strange shimmer in them, but other than that it seemed like she meant it. Then she averted her gaze towards her notebook again.
"If you say so.", I gulped and nervously sat next to her.
"Why do boys assume that girls will lose their minds when they're rejected? I didn't lose anything. It was either gain or no change. Again, unless you behave otherwise. I'm fine, the only one losing their mind is you.", she muttered more to herself than me.
I watched how she finished her equations and gathered her stuff to put it back in her bag. My mind was still boggling with her liking me more than a friend, while she actually just finished her homework and now continued like before. Unbelievable.
"You are one hell of a riddle to me.", I admitted lowly, making her chuckle and shake her head at me.
"Do you want to grab lunch now?"
Y/N pointed to the McDonald's coupon she had for us.
"I-I guess", I accepted hesitantly.
She giggled, walked up to me and poked the sides of my stomach to tickle me. As soon as I involuntarily laughed as well and squirmed around to get her to stop, she drew back from me and smiled.
"Deep breaths and calm down. It's not that big of a deal."
"To you it isn't.", I coughed while catching my breath and grabbed my hoodie.
"Are you going to let this come between us? If so, tell me now, so I can stop wasting my time trying for things to be normal.", she mourned, making me glance at her and then at the floor.
"Uhm, n-no", I replied, pulled a hoodie over my head and grabbed my wallet.
Y/N gave me a thumbs up and then suddenly jumped onto my back.
"Alrighty then. Let's have lunch. Yeehaw!"
I burst out laughing at her last remark and carried her to my car.
