Em double-checked that there was no camera. There wasn’t, which, even though it gave them more time (they didn’t have to figure out how to disable the camera), it made this whole thing weirder. She didn’t know anywhere else that didn’t have a basic security camera.

“Over here,” muttered Eddy under his breath, so that Em could barely hear him, “but I’ve never seen anything like it.” Coming over, Em examined the mini camera in his gloved hand, it was strange and futuristic looking. Turning it over Eddy found the small label, holding it up he asked, “do you recognize that, I don’t.” He heard her take a small gasp, and then she ran out of the room. He waited for a second, and just as he was about to put the strange camera down and go after her, she came dashing back with the old album in her gloved hand.

“Wait, you turned it off right?” She said, pausing with the album cover part open.

“Of course,” the first thing you learned about dissecting strange devices was to first disable them. Slowly she opened the album cover, and pointed to the bottom corner on the inside of the cover. It was the same label as the one on the strange camera. They flipped over a few of the pictures, they all had the same symbol, it seemed to be a cloud and water (a lake or ocean maybe), mashed, and then in the background was a faded picture of someone. Neither of them recognized the person, all they could tell was that it was undoubtedly a child.

“Here, take this,” Em said handing Eddy the album. She bent over and climbed under the desk, feeling around for the secret notch she had found earlier. “Light” she said in a clear voice, and the mini light bulb on the end of her gloved thumb turned on. She took a sudden intake of breath as she realized that the engrave she had felt earlier was the same symbol as before, carved into the old wooden desk. Except this symbol had an old fashioned small keyhole next to it.

“What did you find,” Eddy asked after a few seconds, crouching down next to her.

“The same symbol engraved here,” she answered and pointed, “it looks like we’re gonna have to find and old fashioned key. They would probably keep something like this in their bedroom. I know there’s this switch I pulled once that turned off all the cameras in there, you don’t have a switch like that unless you’re hiding something.”

“But what if there are more cameras like this one, and it doesn’t turn them off?”

“I don’t know, we’ll have to figure it out, but let’s put everything back, they’ll finish their e-meetings soon. We’ll have to wait until they’re out of the house anyway to look for the key, they’ll get suspicious if we go in their bedroom for no reason.”

“Ok, do you want to just forget about it and hang out or something, or do you want to go to that old snail mail post office.”

“You think I can just forget about this?” Em accused, they were both standing up, having put the strange camera back.

“No, but I mean come on, we’ll figure this out and then life’ll go on.”

“Well I’m still on the figure this out part.”

“Ok, ok let’s go.” He sighed, she could be so dramatic sometimes.

“You don’t have to come if you don’t want to,” she replied icily, misinterpreting his sigh.

“Hey, I said I’m in, let’s go.” They left the room, making sure the lights turned off as they left. They couldn’t erase the record that they had been in there, but they hadn’t been recorded, so they could just make up some excuse.
