Chapter 10

Max

“Ok so I’m not going to normal classes; I have to go with Haa so he can introduce me to everything?” I asked. I was sitting with Janet, Rachel, Josias, and Jacob, eating breakfast. Akiva has been here but he only got some coffee and left to the battle room.

“Yeah that’s what Sam told me. But you’re only doing that for your first week, then you can go back to normal.”

“Oh ok.” I stood “Well Imma get going”

“You know where to go?” asked Josias

“Yeah, according to Janet’s tour it’s that temple looking building, right?”

“Umm yeah that’s right,” he said “You remember things really well”

I smiled and walked towards the building.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Welcome Max! As you may know I am Haa, head-minister of this camp,” he smiled and looked at me, then frowned.

            “What?”

“Nothing, we can get to that later but today you will learn the most important stuff. You will learn about your god, Horus. And the god of the gods, Ra. Apparently you have already met both.”

I nodded and sat on the chair in front of Haa desk. “Lets begin.”

“Of course but first you must know how to show respects to your elders. First you must---“

“I already know how” I interrupted

He looked at me with confused eyes “Then why did you not---”

“I don’t have a reason to respect you”

He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose “You’re gonna be a complicated one too aren’t you? Just like Akiva. But at least we know where you come from, I think. Anyway lets start with Horus. Do you know who he is? Other than just your god.”

“No, I just know that’s who I host.”

He nodded, took a calk board out, and started his lesson

“Horus: the falcon god

As I said before, Isis is his mother and Osiris is his dad. The way to recognize him is quite simple. He has unique eyes and always dresses like the warrior he is. He likes to hand out with falcons and hawks. Horus is the falcon-headed god of the sky. He is the god of many things but most known, other than the falcon god, of revenge and war, always war. He is also the protector of Egypt. Horus’s connection to the living Pharaoh is so strong that each pharaoh becomes known as the human manifestation of Horus.

His evil uncle, Set, envies Horus’s power and tries to defeat him at every turn, keeping Horus always at the run. When Set catches him, they battle. On one of the battles Set had been well prepared and attacked Horus by surprise. Set had healed very well and was very strong; during that battle Set damaged one of Horus’s eyes. An eye made of moonlight, creating the Eye of Horus, replaced it. That is why one of Horus’s eyes glow.”

“Who’s Set? Like what go dis he?” I asked, barely sitting on the chair. As he told the story, he drew images and symbols on the board, making them come to life. The battle of Set and Horus, his face, his eye, everything! I could actually do this everyday!

“Ah! I love your curiosity, Max! But I’m sorry to say that you must wait until we get that far. You will not go to Physical and Mental Strength nor will you go to Spells and Magic, you will stay here. So the next person you need to know of is Ra. I must say his history is my favorite. It is full of love and battles, but still he is a person full of love and action. Can we began or do you have other questions about Horus?”

I thought for a moment “I have one question”

“What is that?”

“Why has Horus not had a host in a long time?”

“Ah! Yes! How could I forget! Well that is indeed another story, it is short but it is fun to tell, you ready?”

“Will it have drawings and symbols?”

“Of course and those ‘symbols’ are called hieroglyphics, understood?” I nodded “Perfect!” he cleaned the board and started the next story.

“Horus’s power is quite extraordinary, he is a bit more powerful than Ra, but not by much. His hosts are called “The Eye of Horus” just like his symbol. His power is so great that very few mortals have been able to hold it in. Usually the unlucky person died immediately by the over flow of power. It got to a point when he no longer wanted to find a host; he had given up. One day a young girl, named Maite, came forward and spoke to the sky. Calling Horus to her, when Horus got there the girl said she was willing to be his host, she was aware of the danger but she was willing to take the risk. Horus tried convincing her out of that thought but it was impossible, she had prepared all her life for that moment. So Horus tried, giving her a little amount of power at a time, after giving her about ¼ of the power she was perfectly fine. Horus got excited and gave her more and more. She was able withhold it, all of his power. But the time had to come; she was not immortal, at age 85 she died in her sleep. It was a horrible loss, but ever since then Horus has been looking and looking for someone until he found you.”

“Wow” was all I could say

“Yes, quite extraordinary.” He checked the time on the wall clock “Well we have enough time for Ra. Do you want to start or do you want to wait till tomorrow? It’s quite a lot of information you’re taking in, in just one day.”

“I want to go ahead and do Ra.”

“Are you sure? Though Ra’s part is divided into three today you will only hear the beginning”

“Yes I’m sure”

“Ok” once again he cleaned board and started his story

“In the beginning there was nothing but a huge expanse of water called Nun. Out of this waters of chaos raised the sun god.

Ra was all-powerful and took many forms, but he was alone and surrounded by chaos. He wanted to bring things order to the world and could bring things into being simply by naming them. First he created day and night, saying ‘I am Khepera at dawn, Ra at noon, and Atum in the evening.’ So the sun rose, passed through the sky, and set for the first time.

Because he was alone in the world, Ra created the gods to control other elements. He coughed and breathed out Shu, who made the first winds blow, and spat out Tefnut, who willed the first rains in fall. In turn, Shu and Tefnut had two children: Nut, the sky goddess, and Geb, the earth god.”

“That’s all you’re going to tell me today?”

“Yes, lunch will start in about 15 minutes and you don’t come back to me until tomorrow for class. Plus the second part is the longest part of all. You may do whatever you want now, but no interrupting other classes.”

I nodded and walked out of the room, shutting the door behind me. What was I supposed to do now? I guess I could just sit in the entrance and wait? As I passed the main lobby of the building I saw a boy on his phone. That must be Sam, host of shu the air god. Rachel had told me about him, that he was something called gay, I think she said that it means that he liked boys. I sat on the steps of the door and waited ‘till the bell rang.
