Anna always considered herself a smart, responsible girl. She made her own rules that kept her out of unnecessary trouble. Anna Vandenberg had three rules; keep out of others' problems, get exceptional grades, and don't fall for anyone coming from a pureblood family. At first glance, they all seem pretty simple and Anna always thought they were. Until fate decided to intervene.

It was a Friday. She sighed as she plopped on her warm bed. She felt tired especially after Divination, yet she knew that although her bed was inviting her in with the promise of faraway dreams, she had work to do. Although she craved a free evening, she didn't debate what she needed to do so she sat up and started to think which books she needed to take with her to the old library.

The ambience around her was very dark, the walls and floors were covered in dark brown wood, it reminded Anna of what muggles call Dark Academia and to be frank she loved it. Her roommates enchanted the lights of the room to shine green following the house stereotypical colour. She didn't mind, green was in fact her favourite colour as it was haunting yet calm. It reflected her soul.

She grabbed her messenger bag which already held her parchment, quill, and ink walked to her bedside table, dashed out of the door and into the common room. The darkroom was almost empty, it usually was, especially on a sunny day like today. Except, that is, for the three heads that were huddled together talking in hushed tones. Probably planning for a poor second year's demise Anna thought as she noticed the unmistakable platinum blonde hair that was in the middle of the commotion. She shook her head and headed for the exit.

"Hey Vandenberg, wait up" an all too familiar voice yelled as he stood up from the black leathered sofa that grandly laid in the middle of the Slytherin's common room.

Anna rolled her eyes as she slowly turned to prepare herself for whatever the blond boy was going to ask her. She didn't reply but raised her brow making her golden-brown eyes sparkle in the dimly lit room.

"Goyle is going for a walk around the lake and he was wondering if you would like to join him? If you're not busy that is." He said.

The stupidity that comes from this boy's mouth she thought to herself. She knew the game he was playing and it made her physically sick, she knew that his poor friend liked her last year and although she turned him down, she was nice to him and tried to spare him from embarrassment but knowing Draco he would use this as an excuse to play with her.

"Well blondie if he really wants to take a stroll with me, he should ask me himself. But we both know that's not why we're having this conversation right now, and if you had some decency in that cold icy heart of yours you wouldn't do this to your friend." She said standing a little taller, her posture straighter making her look more powerful and deadly with every syllable she uttered.

"What does tha-" he was cut out by Anna's index finger as it hung in the air in front of him.

"Now I'm going to walk out that door and continue my day so that hopefully you stop continuing to embarrass yourself today especially in front of the boys." Anna said as she spun on her heels and walked away with dignity as she heard Draco growl like a wounded animal.

Anna was never one for saying what people wanted to hear. She wasn't unkind or ignorant of other people's feelings, no, she was the opposite especially to those around her whom she called family. These unfortunately weren't all her blood family except for her eldest sister, Nina whom she hoped to see sitting curled in a book at the table under the last window in the corner of the library.
