I Know What It's Like

I used to have a reoccurring dream that I am running. Rather, I am attempting to flee because a man wielding a pistol is trying to kill me. Terror raising, making my legs go numb, and stumbling, I fall. On the ground, he rushes me, eyes full of anger, as a jolt of panic tears me away from those deep bonds of slumber! Still, I dare not go directly back to sleep. Where I know he waits within the shadows of my next dream. Except, this time, I am wide awake. And it is not my latest nightmare, but here I am, right in the midst of it!

I know what it's like, to die. When it occurs, on a gleaming autumn day, the sun could shine bright overhead. Then abruptly, the world would turn to complete darkness. At least, that is how it happened to me, as he lifted the large handgun, and aimed it at my face. The second I looked down the barrel of his weapon, suddenly, it burst into flames! Since he stood a few feet away, in those moments, all I knew is, I was about to get killed.

Then, all I could see faded away. But a sound split the sea of eternal sleep that threatened to swallow me. From out of the turmoil, a noise entered my ears, as I could hear me scream! So I was able to get ahold of myself. Instantly, I was driven to act. Incidentally, if I wished to keep breathing, knowing I needed to think, I had to get moving quickly!

Never before could I have imagined me in this type of situation. I try to be safe. Plus, my youngsters and I live in the High Desert, with relatively low crime rates. Not to mention, I am a single mother with three small individuals who depend on me. When I awoke that morning and prepared my children for school, I had no warning these events would be ensuing shortly afterward --just four hours later! Had I any notion, I would have hugged my kids much longer when I took them to their bus stop. A long time would pass until they saw me how I was then. Even if they ever do again...
