Daniel paced around his study the morning Amelia was to come. He'd spent the better part of ten years looking for her. As soon as he had turned twenty-one and finished his intensive training to be king, he began looking for Amelia. The first place he'd gone to was the orphanage he'd visited as an eleven-year-old. The orphanage told him they had placed her with a foster family in the town of Bayfield. That led him to the Naustin Family. They explained Amelia moved out when she turned eighteen and lost touch with her. He searched Bayfield, to no avail. No one in town remembered who she was until he found an older woman at a bakery. She explained Amelia moved away to go to culinary school but didn't know which one.
Fast forward to two weeks ago, his sister had been planning her gender reveal. She'd mated Duke Wynston Geraghty the year prior, and now they were expecting their first pup. Savannah had been showing him different dessert ideas for her gender reveal. He wanted to tell her he didn't care, but Wynston was away on business and Savannah was being emotional.
"Danny, look at how cute these cookies are!" Savannah shoved her phone in his face. He jerked back and took in the storks holding babies with white blankets.
"How are they going to reveal the baby's gender?" he asked. She huffed and pointed to the explanation on the webpage. He read and saw with a drop of water the blanket would change either pink or blue depending on the gender.
"Neat."
"You are useless," Savannah cried as tears came to her eyes.
"I am sorry, they look perfect, Vannah," he said, using her nickname and patting her hand.
"I am going to order these. How many do you think we need?" she asked, and he shrugged.
"I don't know. How many people are coming to this thing?" His eyes strayed to the name of the website, and his heart sped up.
"Do you know the baker?" he asked, pointing to the name at the top.
"No, but Dena turned me on to her. She used her for her son Nico's second birthday party. She made construction vehicle cookies," Savannah explained, taking her phone back and ordering the cookies. He quickly pulled up his phone and texted Nick.
D: Nick, I want you to look into who the owner of Amelia's Sweet Treats is and get back to me.
N: Done, I'll get on it right away.
D: Let me know the minute you do.
It took several hours but soon his head of security Alex strolled into his office with Nick not far behind. Alex had dark hair buzzed short and dark eyes, giving him a foreboding look. He spoke little, but when he did, he had a deep voice. Nick was the exact opposite. He had white-blond hair and ice-blue eyes. He shared his opinion with Daniel even if he didn't want to hear it and was his second in command.
"We have splendid news. The owner of Amelia's Sweet Treats is none other than Amelia Byrne," Nick announced, and Daniel's heart beat faster in his chest.
"Are you sure it is my Amelia?" he asked. Both men nodded.
"Her background matches that of what we learned about her these past ten years. What do you want to do?" Nick asked as he sat in a chair, propping one foot up on a knee.
"Send her a letter requesting her presence for the twenty-fifth," he told his beta.
"Done, but why are you going through all this trouble for a girl you haven't seen in over twenty years?" Nick asked.
"That is none of your concern. Just send the letter," Daniel demanded.
"Come on, Dan, we've been friends since we were three. You can do better than that," Nick argued, and Daniel sighed.
"I think she might be my mate," he admitted and watched Nick smile, then laugh.
"Then I will get right on that letter." Nick stood and strode out of the room. Alex followed silently.
A knock sounded on the door, and Daniel turned. He suddenly felt nervous seeing the woman he had fantasized about for years.
"Yes?" he called.
"We have shown Miss Byrne into the throne room," the voice of his butler Floyd announced through the door.
"Thank you," he replied and left his office to go to the throne room. He walked in a back way and looked at her. She stood with her back to him, her dark brown hair curled into ringlets halfway down her back, her curves hugged by her dark blue lace dress. His mouth watered at the sight of her round hips and plump ass. He wanted to touch her. His wolf whimpered and begged for them to go over to their mate. He cleared his throat, and she whirled around to catch his hazel eyes with her emerald green ones. Those were the eyes he dreamed about every night. After meeting her when they were children, he couldn't get the memory of those eyes out of his head. Whenever he would daydream in class, her eyes were what he thought about.
"Amelia," his voice came out deep and a little hoarse. He didn't know what to do. He wanted to pull her into his arms and kiss her, but he didn't want to scare her. She didn't know he'd been dreaming about her for twenty
"Your Highness," she replied, and dipped into a deep curtsy.
"No," he shot out, and her head jerked up. He could see fear and concern pass through her eyes. Way to go, Daniel, you already scared her.
"You don't need to bow to me. You were the only one to treat me like a normal person when my family came to visit the orphanage." He walked up to her quickly and took her hand in his, his wolf sang, they found their mate.
"I did nothing special. I don't want to sound rude, but did you need me to bake something for you? Is that why you called me here?"
"No, what did the letter say?" he asked, praying Nick had put nothing in the letter saying they needed her skills as a pastry chef.
"Just to come here at nine with my I.D."
"I think we have a lot to talk about. Would you come to my office? The throne room isn't the place for our conversation," he asked, holding out his arm to escort her. She wrapped her hand around his arm, and he felt her shaking. He also smelled her fear, her body stiff as they walked down the halls. His wolf was in heaven. He wanted Daniel to stake his claim on their mate before she slipped between his fingers again.
Patience. She has only reconnected with us.
I can feel her wolf pushing for her to mate with us. Her wolf wants me. His wolf declared, and Daniel had to stifle a laugh. How could his wolf know hers was pushing for them to mate?
