Dreams, they haunt me

"Leikn?"

"Stay back! She has been taken by disease! You must leave at once!"

"Disease?"

"No, my child. Not Disease."

"Yes. Disease. Disease only coming from monsters."

"Odin-"

"This monster has a disease. One that we must get rid of Frigga."

"No. She is not a monster but a child. My child. You cannot just get rid of her!"

"Then take her. She is to leave the castle and live on the outskirts of this city. Dead by a mysterious disease."

"What?"

"You are to do as I say or you will be killed!"

"Father? What are you saying?"

"You are an intelligent child, Leikn. You know what I am saying."

I awoke immediately, in a heavy sweat. I tugged on my hair and tried to control my breathing as I calmed myself.

I had the same dream again. Over and over again.

It had been happening for years now, although I suppose you could call it a flashback, as the event took place four years ago.

I pressed my feet to the cooled wood beneath my feet and rose from my bed. I stopped and looked up through the skylight, welded into my ceiling, and at the stars. The sky was lighter than I expected so I presumed it was sometime around four.

Changing into one of my suits, a rather elegant one originally made for my mother to wear, I made my way down the metal spiraling staircase to my kitchen. It wasn't really her style much either. I was lucky it fit.

I clipped my hair back into a bun on the back of my head and made some tea. A watched pot never boils so I moved to the calendar. December 17. My birthday. The kettled whistled and as I went to move it off the stove I heard a low scratchy voice from the other room.

"I'll take a cup."

I smiled softly at his voice and poured him and I a cup, each.

"Happy Birthday." I said when I walked in, setting his cup down on the table in front of him.

"I suppose I should say the same to you." He said giving me a soft smile before pulling himself up into a sitting position on the couch, running his fingers through his greasy hair.

I sat down in my arm chair across the room from him and silently admired our similarities. It was a hobby of mine ever since I read a book on genetics years ago. One that was currently sitting on the extensive shelf behind me.

We had the same hair, well basically. Mine was long and reached my ribs, I had been growing it out for years now. His was shorter, just past his jawline. But both of us had the same jet black hair that curled at the ends. Mine of course more because of the length. Our shape was similar too, we both had a small stature, with small ribs, small arms, and skinny legs. He was much taller than me though. He definitely lived up to the frost giant in us. Not that he knew of that yet.
