Felling the prick of cool metal on the side of my neck, the needle sinks below my skin.  Before I know what's happened, everything goes black.

Disorientated and slightly confused, I blink my eyes and then open them.  I don't know how much time has passed but now the room looks empty of all furniture and I'm all alone.  Strangely, it feels slightly peaceful.  At last.  I turn around slowly, carefully, not knowing what to expect. Poised on two pillars of plain black marble are a knife and a small block of cheese. On impulse, I grab the knife - it would be much more practical.  What am I supposed to do with a damned block of cheese?

From behind me, I hear a rough, vicious growl and my pulse immediately quickens. I whip my head around and stifle a gasp of horror. Standing there is a mangled and mistreated mongrel. It growls again, this time angrier; I see droplets of saliva fly from its maw.  I'm in trouble now.  With a shuddering arm, I raise the knife ready to stab.  Then I stop.  Its sad eyes, its scars: I see myself reflected in it too much.

Gradually I realise I still must kill it but then I hear a small girl's voice.

"Puppy, puppy? PUPPY !" she shouts.  However, the dog lunges towards her, its eyes now gleaming with ferocious malice. No, no, no.  This is not good.  I rush up to the girl and stroking her hair I whisper,

"Hush now, it's alright.  Don't worry.  It can't hurt you." I grimace as the dog lunges at the girl its fowl yellow teeth glinting. Before I see the crimson color of blood I turn away. While the room still swims and my heart thrums in my chest, I grit my teeth. The face of Jeanine fades back into focus; I turn away not wanting her to see my blotchy face and swollen eyes.  I could ever tenure that again.
