Chapter 1
The Shocker
Rockets blasting in the rear and a swirling vortex ahead of us made it very clear—this bus was headed somewhere besides home.
And that left just one question . . .
**
“YAAAAAIIIII . . .” I screamed, jumping upright in my seat as three electrical shocks suddenly surged through my left forearm.
I couldn’t help it.
They caught me by surprise.
I quickly looked around the classroom.
Everyone was staring at me with raised eyebrows.
Mrs. Bluebaugh our substitute science teacher stopped her lecture. She tilted her head down and gazed at me over the rim of the reading glasses she had perched on her nose. Then her big blue eyes narrowed with curiosity. “Miss Stevens, is something wrong?” she asked me.
That’s me Hanna Stevens.
“I—I,” I stammered, feeling panicked and speechless.
I didn’t know what to tell her.
I mean, I was caught off guard.
Never before has Global Comm summoned me while I was in school.
I could feel my heart beating faster.
I needed to come up with a quick answer for my sudden outburst. And I knew I couldn’t tell Mrs. Bluebaugh I had just received a message from Global Comm via the silver armband on my left arm. She would think I was a crazy person, especially since you can’t see the silver armband. It’s invisible until activated by my voice command. Plus, no one knows I’m a Flight Knight. And lastly, no one knows Global Comm is the Top Secret international organization that monitors alien threats to earth.
“Hanna?” I heard Mrs. Bluebaugh question me again.
I still didn’t’ know what to say. So, I did the next best thing.
I made up an answer.
“Oh—sorry, Mrs. Bluebaugh,” I muttered, “just had a sudden pain in my side. I think it’s from P.E. class today.” I watched her eyes release their narrow gaze on me. “May I get a drink of water and run to the restroom?”
Mrs. Bluebaugh was silent for a moment. “No,” she responded directly, “you may not.”
Her answer surprised me.
And then she smiled. “But you may walk to the restroom,” she added softly. “Take the restroom pass.”
All of the kids laughed like Mrs. Bluebaugh had told a joke. Ha-Ha.
I slowly turned in my seat and stood.
Everyone in the class stared at me.
“Thank you, Mrs. Bluebaugh,” I replied, glancing down at Iris—the new girl who was sitting next to me.
I suddenly felt the electrical shocks again.
This time I just grinned.
This must be an emergency, I told myself. If Global Comm is sending out another signal right after the first one—something is seriously wrong.
I crossed the front of the classroom and turned the door knob.
“Hanna,” I heard Mrs. Bluebaugh call out to me before I walked out the door.
I looked back.
“Yes, Mrs. Bluebaugh?”
“The restroom pass,” she reminded me.
“Oh, yes. Thank you,” I replied, smiling. “Almost forgot.”
“What a dork,” I heard one of the boys, Ben Johnson the school bully, blurt out.
Everyone in class laughed except, Iris, the new girl. Right away she turned around and stood up for me.
“Hey, what’s your problem?” she demanded. “Leave her alone.”
I think Iris shocked the entire class because everyone quickly got quiet.
I know she shocked me.
In the 3 weeks that Iris has been at our school she’s hardly said a word to anyone. She was tall like me. And had a slightly tan complexion with brown eyes and jet-black hair that was cropped short just below her ears. You could see she was of Asian descent, but I’m not good at knowing peoples ethnicity by site so I can’t tell you that. But what I can tell you is that she had a friendly smile.
I gave her a thankful smile and walked out the door.
For the third time, shocks surged through my left arm.
I headed straight for the restroom. It was the only place where I could privately check the message from Global Comm.
My mind whirred with worry. What’s happening? What’s so urgently important that Global Comm would summon us during school? Was there an alien invasion happening right now?
