𝗙rankie sat alone on the bench, her math book open in her lap, but her eyes weren't moving across the page. she was staring blankly, her pen resting in her hand, the numbers blurring into the background of her thoughts.

"hey, red."

she blinked, lifting her head at the familiar voice. lucas dropped down beside her, his usual half-smile already tugging at the corners of his mouth.

"hey, cowboy," she replied with a tired smirk, shutting her book and slipping it into her backpack. "what's got you so happy this morning?" she looked at him, a little hopeful. "'cause i think i need some of that."

lucas shrugged, stretching his arms lazily behind his head. "it's just the way i am. i can't help it."

before frankie could ask anything else, another voice chimed in—bright and chipper.

"so did you decide on a movie?"

missy stood in front of them, eyes locked on lucas like frankie wasn't even there.

"movie?" frankie repeated, glancing between the two, confusion creeping into her voice.

lucas turned toward her, his tone casual. "yeah. missy asked me to the movies."

frankie stared at him. her mouth opened slightly, then shut again. "and you said yes?"

lucas furrowed his brow, clearly not expecting that reaction. "yeah, i did."

frankie's lips pulled into a small, polite smile. it didn't reach her eyes. "well... i hope you two have a good time."

she stood abruptly, her backpack slung over one shoulder, and walked off toward the building. the smile was gone before she even reached the doors.

"frankie."

she heard him behind her, but she didn't stop walking. "hmm?"

"is there a problem?" lucas's voice was closer now. he had followed her into the hallway, his footsteps echoing behind hers.

she kept her back to him. "no. everything is good."

he stepped up beside her, his presence warm and familiar. "what was that back there?"

"i don't know what you're talking about," she said, staring at the floor tiles.

"is there a reason i shouldn't go?"
