Raising my sword, I jumped into the air to slice through the jelly-like creature below me, until-
"Out of the way, brat!" someone yelled. My eyes shifted towards them, causing me to lose balance and stumble to the ground. The whistle of a blade sifting through the air and the thudding of my body against the thick grass was the only sound filling the silence. As I looked to see what happened, I noticed the blob was already dead. Sticky, blue subtances spilled from the inside of the Niane. I blinked a few times.
"What?! I had it!" I stood up. Of course, Levi ran in and defended me once again. "I could've gotten it, captain."
"Tch. Yeah, right. The angle of your weapon and stance would've just barely missed it." He said coldly, scraping the slime off his blade.
"Sir, if you just let me-"
"Listen, brat. I saved you. Let it go." I watched as he ran off to go look out for the other cadets, groaning to myself. He's always on my ass telling me I don't do enough to help, but interferes when I get close enough to victory. He's even smaller than me, too! What the hell is his problem?
Sighing, I moved on and dove off of the cliff full of greenery, using my gear to swing down the ravine. The crevices were filled to the brim with monsters; perfect time to show off my skills to 'Mr. Perfect'. I slid across the dusty terrain and went around, slicing as many of the slimy creatures as possible.
Suddenly, I felt the ground rumble, approaching me from ahead. It got closer and closer, making me tremble. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see deep red fur, matted with white spots, spread across giant cat-like paws. My expression changed from fearful to blank as my eyes met the pupils of the horned bobcat. The length and width of this one had to be at LEAST ten meters by four. As it roared, bearing its dangerously sharp fangs, it charged at me. I didn't know what to do besides stand there. It was my third day in combat, I hadn't gotten the least bit of practice for whatever THAT thing was. Just then, I felt an arm curl around my waist and lift me into the air, my foot just barely missing the jaws of the bobcat.
Once I looked up at the person, I sighed. Levi came to my rescue again. Was it a sigh of relief, compassion, or annoyance? I don't know. Maybe all? If I'm being completely honest, he looked perfect from the angle I was at. He looked perfect from any angle, but the way he had a hold of me made me question my thoughts on him.
"Are you okay, brat?" He said lowly.
"Yes, sir. Thank you."
"It's nothing. Be more careful."
I could feel myself slipping out of his grasp, but I was too afraid to hold him.
"Aren't you going to hold onto me, dumbass? You're going to fall and die." He looked down at me with piercing eyes, yet they'd somehow grown softer. It was almost like he cared.
I wrapped my arms around his waist, carefully pressing my head against him and burying my face in his side. I hoped he didn't mind that I was clinging to him that way. If he asked, I'd tell him I'm afraid of heights and didn't want to look down. Foolproof plan. I inhaled, picking up the scent of his cologne and what seemed like mint... and cleaning supplies?
We landed back onto the field as he readjusted his harness. My arms fell from his side and I looked down over the edge at the angry cat.
He turned to face me. "Stay away from those. They're likely to kill anything in their path, and they're determined."
"Yes, sir." I replied, fascinated with the creature.
He faced the opposite way and hesitated before speaking again. "Oh, and Y/N?"
I shifted my gaze to him. "Yes, sir?"
"Did you sniff me?"
I felt my cheeks turn bright red. Not only is he a clean freak, he has super senses too. Before I could respond, he peered over his shoulder and gave a small smile, then shot his gear and flew away. Well, shit.
"Y/N!" I heard a familiar voice call out to me, a smile forming on my face.
"Hi, Armin."
"How many did you get?"
"Seven. And a half." I said proudly, blowing off my nails sarcastically.
"Seven?! I barely got five." He whined. "Where did you find all of them?"
"Down in the ravine." Eren responded for me, walking up to us with Mikasa following close behind. The girl has been watching out for him all day. She didn't think anything would happen to him, did she?
"There's hundreds. You didn't see them?" Mikasa questioned.
Armin shook his head. "No. But I did see something else rather unusual. Do you have a thing going on with Corporal Levi, Y/N?"
"What!? No! That's ridiculous, why would I-"
"He held you very closely on that ride up here. Why was your face so far into his side?"
"I'm... afraid of heights." I winked, trying to brush it off as a joke.
"Y/N, do you think we're stupid? You DEFINITELY have something for him." Eren remarked, snickering.
"It's true. We won't tell anyone." Mikasa placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Tsk, knock it off. So what? He smelled nice and of course he looked hot is all. There is nothing going on between us."
That definitely gave me away.
Armin sighed. "Alright. But between us, I think you'd look good together. You both are grumpy in the mornings."
I snorted and nudged his shoulder with mine. "Whatever. It's because everyone is an asshole in the morning."
"Y/N, no one thinks that besides you and the captain." They all laughed and went off on their way to go look for more Niane down in the bay.
I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if Corporal Levi and I were together. That wouldn't work, right? Weighing the options, he's much older than I am and would never fall for a cadet. But if he did, I wouldn't completely be opposed to it. Y/N Ackerman, it has a ring to it, don't you think?
