After breakfast, the girl sent the children to school and then she went to market. It was still early when she returned home. The children were at school, her husband was at work and the house was quiet. So she decided to make some tarts for tea. In a short time, she was busy mixing butter and flour, her hands were soon covered with sticky pastry. At exactly that moment, the thelephone rang. Nothing could have been more annoying. She picked up the teceiver between two sticky fingers and was dismayed when she recognized the voice of Mrs Bates. It took her ten minutes to persuade Mrs Bates to ring back later. At last, she hung up the receiver. What a mess! There was pastry on her fingers, on the telephone, and the door-knobs. She had no sooner got back to the kitchen than the door-bell rang loud enough tobwake the dead. This time it was the postman and he wanted her to sign for a registered letter!, 'what?'
