"Hange?" Moblit's voice rang through the silence of the bedroom they lied in. It was the night before the retake of Wall Maria, and Moblit had his head resting on Hange's chest.

"Yes, darling?" Hange's voice was quick to follow. They both knew they were too scared to actually sleep. Both of them had a deep, plaguing feeling at the bottom of their stomachs.

"Do you think I'm going to die tomorrow?"

The silence that shook the room was almost deafening.

"Why would you say that?" Hange questioned, their voice practically trembling as Moblit lifted his head to look at them.

"I don't know... I just, I have this feeling I'm not going to make it." Hange's eyes widened as they noticed Moblit's lower lip beginning to tremble. He never, ever cried around them. "I'm scared. I don't want to die, Hange."

They immediately sat up in bed, pulling Moblit towards them so that his head rested in the crook of their neck. "I won't let anything happen to you, Moblit. I promise."

He threw his arms around their neck, their grip tightening with every sob that wracked his body.

"I love you, Hange! I don't want you to leave me all alone up there in the afterlife!" He sobbed into their neck, and Hange had never felt their heart break more.

"You won't be going to the afterlife, okay? You're going to make it out and we're going to grow old and die together. I promise."

Moblit sniffled, before laughing weakly. "You're not supposed to make promises in a war."

They laughed as they stroked their hand through his hair. "Yes but this will be one I fulfil."

But it wasn't.
