Third person POV:

THE darkness encased the silent street. Only near the turning was there a lone streetlight, struggling helplessly to create enough light to make up for the rest. The street seemed to be abandoned, like no living creature had set foot on its path for years. It was the type of place parents would tell their children to stay away from, the type where dangerous things happened in the shadows, the type where supposed murders and kidnappings took place. The place you want to be nowhere near after dark.

A car's brakes screeching to a halt tore through the quiet. The headlights faintly illuminating the houses that ran along both sides of the road. Leaving the engine running, a woman threw open the driver's door and clambered out. Slamming of car doors rippled through the air and only added to the suffocating silence that returned after. The woman hurried down the path leading to one of the houses, gripping the hands of two young children. Whimpers and sniffles escaped their mouths as they were dragged along after her.

The woman stopped in front of house number 57 and began to knock hurriedly on the door. After a minute had passed and she still received no answer, the woman began to increase the pressure of her knocks until she was banging harshly against the door with her palm.

The door suddenly flung open revealing a distressed looking man and woman dressed in pyjamas.

"Please take them," The woman breathed out, pushing the children forwards into the doorway. "Please, they were the only ones I could get out."

"Did you really think you would get away with this?" He asked, aiming a gun at her head, "Did you really think that you could win?"

She shook her head frantically, keeping her gaze fixed on the floor. She couldn't make eye contact with him, not now, that would only intensify his anger. Instead, her head was swimming with ways of possible escape, each option more hopeless than the previous.

Worry started to consume her as the probability of her making it out of this house alive was close to none. That was until her eyes caught sight of an object laying under the coffee table.

"Did you really think I wouldn't find out?" he continued, waving the gun around in the air tauntingly "God, how thick are you? I know everything!"

She flinched slightly at the power he held in his voice. When he didn't speak for a while, she risked looking up at him only to find him studying the gun he held lazily in his hand.

"You know," he started, "I actually liked you. You weren't like the others. I didn't scare you as much."

Trying to not alert him with her movements while his gaze was still fixed downwards, she slowly crouched down to retrieve the gun hidden there for emergencies.

"But I guess that was the problem, wasn't it? I grew attached. I got blinded by you. I wasn't able to see straight away that you were just using me." She wrapped her fingers around the handle, grasped it tightly in her hand and quietly stood up.

"Me! I'm the leader of the American Mafia for Christ's sake. A poor, useless maid using a Mafia leader for her own personal gain. Risky business if you ask me and trust me, I would know all about it. Honestly, did you really think you would be able to do it?"

He looked up, finally noticing the gun she held which was now pointed straight at his head. His eyes widened momentarily, a look of shock passing through his face. He quickly recovered though, masking his emotions with a blank façade and a humourless laugh escaped through his lips.

"What are you going to do?" he asked mockingly, "Shoot me?"

The woman just stared at him, waiting for the right moment.

"Well go on then, do it. I personally don't think you have the guts too, but I guess we'll see. Do you even know how to cock a gun, Sweetheart?"

A loud bang echoed through the room, coupled with the sound of glass shattering. The man spun around, only to be met with a broken window behind him. He turned back, his gun raised and ready to use on the person who caused more trouble than they're worth when he noticed he was alone in the room.

"Guards!" He shouted to the people outside, "Find her! She can't have gone far! This is my house for God's Sake! If you don't want to share her fate, I suggest you find her, and quickly!"

The man and woman just stood there, confusion etched upon their faces, not being able to process what was happening. The woman pushed the kids further through the door, so they were standing in the hallway of the house.

"Please. I promise I'll call you later and explain everything. Just take them. Please, just keep them safe. Hide them from them. I really need to go, they're following me." With that she took off down the path, got into her car and sped off down the road.

She never called them.

They got to her first.
