“You didn’t go home last night, Lizzie. What happened?” Lara’s voice boomed on their little run-down apartment early in the morning whilst Lizzie threw her bag on the living room with a loud thud. “You don’t fucking care, Lara!” Lizzie spat back and she blinked for several times until her swearing sunk on her senses.
“Did you just swear in front of me? Since when did you start swearing like that?” Anger rose from every pore of her body.
“Since you started whoring yourself, what a great big sister you are!” She doubled and tears destroyed the metal barricade she built herself to stop those tears of weakness from flooding her eyes. Her eyes darted on the other side of the small room to lock eyes with Louise who stared at them with shock.
How?
“What, are you surprised that I knew? Ha! You didn’t want us to learn it, did you? Well, tough luck, I saw you last night dancing in front of those perverted people, you let them snog you with their eyes!” She laughed humourlessly and Lara tried to speak but no words came out from her mouth at all. Of course, she feared this moment, and she expected that this was how they would react but she never thought it would hurt like this. She never imagined a pain like this.
“Lizzie, what are you talking about? Lara works in a 24-hour restaurant downtown.” Louise’s voice was shaky and tears were evident but she refused to look at her tear stricken face, she was scared.
“Louise, get out of the house. Lizzie and I have to talk.” Lara said sternly her voice never shook, she was used of bottling her emotions and she could stop herself from showing any of it.
“No, Louise, you have to know this too…” Lizzie looked at Louise with so much angst that Lara felt her heart breaking. “You have to know that our sister isn’t great at all.” Lizzie’s voice shook at the end of her statement and her lips quivered. Lara wanted to engulf her with a hug, but she decided against it, Lizzie was mad and it would only put her on edge.
Louise's head slowly turned towards Lara and she begged her with her eyes to reassure her that it wasn't true, all of those were lies made by Lizzie. "You don't believe me, do you? Ask her yourself, Louise, let's see if she could lie in our faces like what she has been doing all along." Lizzie said her eyes were hard; they were really blood sisters for as they have the same expressions.
"Ask her!" Lizzie shouted and Louise cringed, Lara took a step forward towards her shaking sister.
"Louise, please... Lizzie, stop this!" Lara said but Lizzie refused to look at her, she wanted to see her sister's brown eyes that she took after their father.
They loved their father.
Louise opened her mouth, "Are you?" She whispered but Lara heard it as clear as crystal and she gulped the tears that were threatening to spill from her lids. "Are you doing it...? Like what Lizzie says?" She continued, Lara could feel the urge to cry and she could almost taste her tears at the back of her tongue yet no tears were coming out at all. She couldn't cry, for the long time that she refused to cry it finally stopped on its own.
"Yes." Lara spoke with clarity as if she didn't care that Louise fell on the floor as her knees buckled and Lizzie's eyes widened in surprise, or in hatred. She didn't know but she cared, because it was killing her inside. "I do work as a pole dancer."
"You're a prostitute? A whore?" Lizzie cried out as she pushed her with so much strength that Lara fell back. "How could you! Why did you... Why? For how long?" At the age of seventeen, Lizzie learned that her life wasn't good at all, her sister was a whore and a dirty woman.
"I am a dancer in a bar." Lara said again and she felt a sharp sting on her cheek, and when she looked at her sister's stretched hand, tears fell from her eyes.
