A few things you need to know for this is that, one:

It's being told from the Point Of View of Sage.

Two: Sage's love interest is River. River goes by She/They prounouns, while Sage goes by She/Her.

Three: This is the first love story I've written, so please bear with me.

Four: It's mainly set in school, either Sage's or River's home, or the country park. There are other settings, also.

For the first chapter, it's set in school.

Sage's POV:

Time- what time is it?
11:30am
Damn, 15 minutes left of maths 'till lunch. How's River doing-
Pfft, look at their brows furrowing now their focused. She's so cute, oh my gosh. Look, look, look, their lips are slightly parted. Oh. Oh, River's lips are parted. I could just lean over and kiss- I could kiss River. Holy damn, I could kiss River if we both wanted. Oh my god, their lips would be really warm- they'd be so soft, I bet, and so, so sweet. God, that would be perfect, she could put their hand in my hair and I could hold onto their shoulders and, and- fuck, I'm in class, I shouldn't be thinking about this right now. I probably shouldn't even be thinking about this at all, should I? Shit, my face feels really hot, god I'm probably blushing like crazy. My hands find their way to my face and hide it from view. I rub my eyes a few times before removing my hands from my face and rubbing my chin slightly. Glancing over, I see them staring. They look away almost as soon as I catch them. Looking left then right, I whisper:

"River. River, hey, hey. Do you get it? I don't understand what we're meant to be doing. Can you help?" My eyebrows were already knitted together. Tch, it's such an annoying habit. I'm gonna get forehead creases before I turn 30 at this rate, I sigh.

"Sage, oh my gosh. You never get it do you?" And- why did she look amused? "Here, come here, I'll show you how to do this question." She turned to point to the question then back to look up at me. " 'kay?"

"Mhm, okay." I nod. "Can you help me on this question instead, please? This is the one I don't get."

"Hmm, yeah, sure." She shrugged. "I don't see why not."

River leaned over to my side of the desk and moved my book closer to her. "Right, so for this one, you basically just have to do X- 3 on both sides, then multiply these, and-"
Yeah, I couldn't tell you what she said next, because honestly I just zoned out at this point. But how could I focus when she was just guiding my hand across the page like it's nothing? My hand must be sweating by now, right? Does she think it's gross? Should I move my hand away? Oh god, what if she thinks I'm weird? But their hand is so soft, so then how their fingertips so calloused and rough? The feel of their hand in mine is so good. It feels right, it just-

"Sage. Do you get it now?"

"Huh?" I blinked once, heavily, before looking up at them. When did she finish explaining? Did I really stare at our hands the whole time? Did she notice? Who am I kidding, of course she noticed. But she looks so calm, as if she couldn't tell I've been stuck in the feel of their hand on mine.

"Sage? Do you understand now? I can help you again if not."

"No, no, it's fine. Thanks. I get it now. Yeah, thank you!"

"Anytime." She smiled.

Their smile is so painfully soft. How could somebody as perfect as them smile at me like that? God, it's killing me. I can already feel myself smiling again. She's just the best. How could anyone not fall in love with them? I mean, I hope nobody else falls for them, but how could they not? Honestly, how on Earth did I get so lucky as to find you, River? But heck am I glad I did. Really.

Fuck- I still don't know how do do this. I don't want to ask River again, so I'll just relax for a bit. I stretch my right arm out on my desk and lay my head on the lower part of my forearm. Head tilted just enough so that I can see River without trying. River's dark hair has been illuminated by the light from the open windows, and the tips of their hair are moving slightly. It's really calming to watch them like this. I'm not sure why. Is that bad? Is that weird? I'm not sure. It looks almost as if their eyes are closed with the way she's looking down, and their eyelashes are just grazing the tops of their eye bags. Their eye bags. Does she not get enough sleep? She needs to sleep, or she-

Ah, the bell for lunch rang. I hesitantly lift my head up and tear my gaze from River. "Finally, lunch." I mutter to them as we're packing our bags.
She chuckled ever so slightly. She chuckled. Ah. That was adorable. That was so pretty- ah, can a sound even be pretty? I can already feel my cheeks burning up again. Not as much as last time, but still. I could still feel it.

We're eating lunch on the field. It's warm today, so why not?

"Hmm, school is boring."

"Yeah, I guess so, Sage. But at least I get too see you." She said pointing at me.

"Ha, yeah." Oh god, what do I say to that? Yeah, same? Or maybe, oh, really? Or, aww, that's so sweet of you to say?

River eyed me for a while before saying
"You don't have to think of something nice to say back, you know? I was just saying how it is for me. That's all. Don't worry about it. Alright?"

"Yeah no, that's alright. That's cool. That's fine."
.....

"I like seeing you, too." There. I said it. How is she gonna react?

Smiling, River said "Yeah," putting their legs out in front of them and banging the tips of their shoes together, "yeah, I know," just then, she turned her head up and smiled right at me.

It was such a warm smile, gosh. I really do love River, so very much.

"Thanks."

End of school (sorry for the time skip, I couldn't think of anything else to put.)

"Yours or mine?"

"Hmm. Well, my parents will be at work until around 8:00pm tonight, but I don't mind, what about you?" Well, when you look at me like that, I'm obviously gonna wanna go to your house, River. Jeez. Don't look so happy, it's killing me that I can't kiss your head right now.

"Yours. If you don't mind. I've got somebody redecorating the bathroom at the moment, so it would've been hard for you to come to mine. So yeah." That was a lie, obviously. Jeez, if lying is making me feel this bad, then how am I gonna pretend the bathroom is actually redecorated?

I turn my head towards River just in time to catch her studying my face. Shit, shit-

Thank you for reading this far, I understand it was short, but still thanks for reading the first chapter. Anyways, forgive me if I don't update very often. I've got tests for school coming up and I need to revise. I also really struggle to write without the motivation, and it doesn't come to me that often. I'm also unsure if I've used River's pronouns correctly, so if you're a she/they pronoun user, could you give me some tips please? It'd be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry if I got them wrong and offended anyone. Thanks again. I'll write and update as much as I can though, if you like the story. Thanks!
