I was once again sitting on a hospital bed back at the bastion hospital. Rush was shaking his head as he stood over me his arms crossed as he looked at me. "Is this going to be a regular thing Jason?" He said resignedly as I was slowly pulling on my combat boots. It had been a day since the procedure took place and after it's completion I had fallen unconscious where I was rushed to the hospital. After a day in bed with Rush monitoring me I was again set with a clean bill of health and a talking to from Rush.
"Seriously man" he went on "if you don't watch it you're not gonna wake up again after your next accident!". I moaned exasperatedly as I looked up at Rush, I knew he had good intentions but his nagging was getting to me. "It's the kinda stuff I do Rush! I may as well get used to it" I snapped back and Rush hung his head, sighing "suit yourself!" and then gestured to the ward exit. I jumped off the bed at that and after slapping Rush on the back as thanks I strode quickly out of the ward, I had barely made it three steps out of the hospital entrance however where a familiar voice called my name almost causing me to sigh in exasperation before I reminded myself that I was a soldier in NATO now, so I forced myself to turn around and stand to attention before saluting crisply and respond with "yes sir?".
Nathan strode towards me again, this time accompanied by Doctor Whitley and the same humvee that had picked me up the day before was again sat idling on the road beside the hospital. "At ease" said Nathan as he neared me and the two men stopped in front of me as I relaxed my posture. "It's good to see you're well Jason" said Whitley somewhat apologetically as he looked at me and he held out his hand which I took and shook lightly. "I hope the procedure worked!" I responded and Whitley broke out into a wide smile, "most definitely!" He said excitedly now, "we now have excellent samples of your DNA and accompanying activated blood it's just a matter of synthesizing and applying it to the technology!!". "All right doctor" said Nathan cutting across the man, "enough chit chat we came to Jason for a reason!".
The doctor nodded quietly and Nathan looked at him for a moment before turning to me. "Well Jason" he started "I'm terribly sorry I have to ask this so soon after your last procedure but we need you to come with us again" I gave Nathan a look which promptly made him add "nothing as strenuous as the last procedure I promise! It's the classified piece of tech that Manson couldn't tell you about, we need you to test it with the rest of your squad now that you have clearance to know about it." That information cleared my expression and I nodded my understanding, "okay sir" I said "where to?", "This way" said Whitley and he led us to the idling humvee and we all clambered in.
I stared out of the window as we set off, winding our way through the base streets and I looked at all the thousands of men and woman that made up the NATO forces as they passed as blurs past my window, I was one of them now and now that I was, I felt emboldened. I was with the good guys, the winners and the champions of freedom and I was ready to do whatever it took to crush the UEFP forces. Soon we were at the familiar gates to the cordoned off area of bastion and after the guards hurriedly waved us through the gates, we sped this time towards the largest grey building by far in the secure area.
Whitley pulled us up in front of the double door entrance the building had with a screech of tyres and as I got out I looked at the building I stood in front of. It was the size of at least 3 large warehouses put together and the doors set in the front were tiny compared to the rest of the building. Nathan walked forward as I took in the building and swiped his ID card on a scanner set into the wall which let out a loud beep and the front doors opened. I was shaken out of my reverie by the noise and I followed Nathan and Whitley into the building.
The interior of this building came across as much more industrial in nature and the walls, floor and ceiling were all made of dented, slightly rusted metal. The lighting was bright and powerful allowing you to see everything and various peoples in blue leather jumpsuits walked up and down the wide spacious corridor, objects ranging from clipboards to electronic parts held in their hands. Whitley took lead this time and he led me and Nathan past the various engineers and down the long corridor, after a minute of walking Whitley stopped in front of a ship style heavy metal door set in the wall. With a grunt Whitley turned the circular handle in the center of the door and it swung open with a rusty creak. Beyond was a huge room and it was mostly dominated by a large area filled with targets, broken robotic parts, scorch marks, shell casings and bullet holes. the rest however was what I imagined to be a tinkerers wet dream. Racks upon racks of tools lined a wall at the far end of the narrow safety area beside what could only be described as a testing area. Then tables upon tables of of parts, electronics and tools sat lopsided in front of the tool racks, beside that were stands with complex looking frames suspended on them.
