Oasus is a world of dragons, demons, and monsters. The infernal creatures constantly war for control of the land, leaving the few human kingdoms in the start of a dark era. The remaining humans have formed a close-knit army and community, few towns left at the edges of The Unknown.

You are Sam, a mage in Hora, a town in the kingdom of Alpos. You live with your father, a priest, and your mother, a peasant. You were always a curious child and your parents encouraged you to learn magic and the sword. You've always been fascinated by the world around you, but you've recently discovered the sheer amount of magic from it and you've found yourself quite enthralled by it.
You are also in the process of training to become a warrior. While magic is your forte, it seems that the sword is going to be an important part of your life.

"Morning!" you greet your parents, as you enter the shabby house which you call home. Your parents give you a smile and nod, before your mother goes back to stirring something in a pot on the stove.

You take a deep breath as you sit down at the table. Turning your gaze to your parents, you muster up some courage and tell them, "Mom, dad, I've made up my mind about what I'll do. I am going to be an adventurer, exploring the edges of The Unknown and fighting beasts and demons."

Your mother turns to you, her eyebrows deeply furrowed. Her eyes display a mixture of worry and concern, but also a hint of sadness. "You aren't going, Sam. I won't let you."

You stand up, eyes looking straight into your mother's, "Mom! You know I've always been different from everyone- in every way! This is what I'm good at! I'm not going to become like father, hanging around the village and taking up his occupation, serving the gods!"

Your mother sighs, running her hands through her long red hair. After a moment, she grins, going to the couch and patting the spot next to her, motioning for you to sit.

"Sam...I believe in you, that you can fend for yourself and even flourish out in the darkness, but your father would be very angry if you left. We raised you to be a warrior, a knight in the kingdom of humans. To be an adventurer is to not only be far from the king, but from your family as well. I..."

You grip her hand tightly, your face displaying determination, "Trust me, mother, I've thought about this a lot. I am ready for this. I want to go travel the world! I want to see everything! And don't you think about me dying out there because I've been born for this!"

Your mother shakes her head, her long, red locks swaying with the motion. Silence fills the room before she says, "...Take everything that you think you might need and besides that take this as well," she stands up, opens a cupboard, then hands you an amulet. It's gold, with a red hexagonal gemstone in the center.

"What's this?" you ask, feeling a tingle of magic coming off of it.

"This amulet has been in my family longer than the darkness has been in Oasus. Whoever wears it, simply cannot die. If you're truly leaving, this will help you," she finishes, then quickly looks around, "Now go! Before your father finds out!"

You nod your head, standing to leave. You throw the amulet over your neck and hold the fur collar of your cloak close tightly. You hug your mother one last time and open the creaky molten old door.

Outside is dark, as usual.
