Charles and Sophia were dragged along to a box at the back of the train. Now Charles was scared out of his wits, wanting to be out of this situation more than anything in his life. Yes, he was a detective and he should be used to this stuff, but the problem was that he wasn't. After a horrible encounter with people just like these, he retired from fieldwork and simply stayed at the office.
Sophia on the other hand was more annoyed at the men instead of scared. The whole walk you could hear her throwing out insults at them. The oddest part was that none of them made a move to stop her. They looked more scared than anything.
They were shoved inside the box but only one of them landed on the floor, Charles. "The one day I'm not warmed up and ready to fight." He looked over at Sophia who was glaring at him. He started to feel around his pockets, "Blast, I also forgot my gun, what bad luck." Sophia looked at him with a skeptical expression.
"You? Ready to fight with a gun? Charles please, this is serious, and no time to throw around such jokes. You probably haven't even killed a person and if that were true I don't see how you would get us out of this mess." She kicked over a can of some type of beans and sat on the floor. She began to argue with the guard standing at the entrance.
"Hey, Blunderbuss care to tell me why in the world have we been kidnapped? If this is for ransom I am damn sure no one is going to pay any money for this guy." She points over to Charles and he is gawking at her. "Excuse me! I think I am worth some money." He said annoyed as he turned his back on her.
"Charles don't worry I would have gotten us out of this mess but I am afraid I have lost all my money." She stood up and walked towards the tall man, "Care to elaborate on my dilemma, I am sure you know all about it." You could see the guy's face resisting the urge to yell back at her. Instead, he calmly turned around and pointed back to where she was sitting. "Please just sit back down." With those words, he glared at her and left the box.
Sophia returned back to Charles who had his back away from her and tapped him on the shoulder. "Yoo-hoo! Big summer blowout." She said in a Swedish accent, tossing a gun to him. He jumped in surprise and caught the weapon before it hit the ground. "How did you get that?"
She smirked, "I have my ways." He inspected the gun and saw the initials A.D on it. Deciding just to ignore it he glanced back up at her. "I haven't shot a gun in years so don't expect me to be any good." She sighed and started pacing.
"If you can't shoot then give it to me, I'm sure I could make more use of it." He looked at her shocked. "You, shooting a gun? That might be the scariest image I've thought of all day, and I suggested going to the bathroom with you." He made a disgusted face and she glared back at him.
"I would have hoped that we agreed to never speak of that again." He grunted in acceptance. She eyed the gun and snatched it out of his hand. She had started towards the door until a hand reached and stopped her and pulled her down to the floor. She looked behind her shoulder and saw Charles holding her arm.
"We can't go yet, we have to make a plan first." His hand was still on her arm and she shook it off, flushing a deep red.
"Sure, just never touch me again." She stated abruptly, hiding her face by looking the other way.
They sat down and planned out they were going to escape this predicament. There was still dust on the ground from not being cleaned enough and Charles began to run his fingers through it, planning an escape. They had a gun, which put them at an advantage, but so did the others. While mapping out their plan their knees brushed against each other They both looked up at the same time and locked eyes.
"This is going nowhere, we should just wing it," Sophia spoke, breaking the silence and their eye contact. "We could use the gun to get the guard outside as a hostage and use that as leverage. Using him as a shield we could walk back into the compartment and hope that they won't bring their guns into a big group of people. They don't seem like the kind of group that wants to be noticed and we can use that to our advantage by getting back to our compartment."
Charles looked at her with an open mouth. "How did you come up with all that? Actually, never mind that question, how do you know what to do in this situation? That is not something a lady should worry herself over." By this point, Sophia had kept herself calm and collected, but she finally broke. She brought her hand down on the ground and turned to him again.
"Charles, will you stop reminding me that I am this useless junk that can't do anything? I am sick and tired of you opening your mouth and commenting on the fact that I am a woman. Just because I am of a certain gender does not mean I am much different from you, in fact, I probably am the only one that can get us out of this situation right now. I need you to do as I say and follow my lead because I know what I am doing."
What had started as shouting ended in a whisper. Her eyes had a slight sheen to them and her cheeks were red. The hand she had placed down had traveled to her hair where she started to push it back in exasperation. "Sorry, I just got carried away, but I need you to listen to me. I have this all figured out."
Throughout the whole speech, Charles had been looking at the ground and when she stopped talking he glanced back up at her.
"Sophia I...I am truly sorry. This time I really mean it, not that I didn't mean my apologies before." He was too nervous to say anything, but it was more that he didn't know what to say.
"Fine, fine I accept your apology, but one more thing. Make up your mind, you either hate me or you don't. If you don't want to admit to either of them that's fine, but just choose."
She started towards the door to see if there was a way to get out and surprisingly there was. The door wasn't locked but there was a very large man at the door. A frown came upon her face until a shorter man came up and said something to remove the guy from the door.
"The boss wants to meet you, we have to go."
The guard who had been standing there started to disagree, "What about the door? And isn't the boss you know in he-" The shorter man scowled and hit the other man, "Of course our boss isn't here, HE is in the front cabin. Let us go now."
They both nodded and left the box, Sophia turned around to Charles with a smirk. She bowed slightly as she opened the door "After you monsieur."
