Chapter 1
Swallowing every last bit of fear, I stepped forward slowly and carefully. One wrong move and everything would end. What was everything? My life, the world, the universe? All the memory that anything that existed?, Leaving nothing but a world void of emotion or life? Of course I still wished I had more answers than "everything will change," but I suppose you just can't have everything you want.
"Come oooon, don't be a ssssscaredy bbaaabby," one of the many spooky voices inside my head taunted. I whispered a few cuss words in annoyance and fear before I closed my eyes.
First, there was blackness, what everyone else could see when they closed their eyes. Then, came the image. Of course, I was still closing my eyes, so it came just as a thought. The image of it was clouded over by the blackness of my closed eyelids, but it became much crisper as I focused. My head throbbed and was screaming to stop, but I knew those were only my survival instincts kicking in. But I didn't need those, they were silly little thoughts blocking my way to save everything. Besides, I was promised to be kept safe, wasn't I?
I cut off my stupid babbling at myself and focused harder trying to ignore the searing pain cutting into my brain. Was I breathing? I checked my pulse from my wrist, still focusing on the image and closing my eyes. I found the pounding beat in less than a second; it was beating unnaturally fast. I let both my arms fall to my sides and focused harder. It would be much easier if I had known what I was focusing on, but since it wasn't my memory, I had no idea what I was trying to see. Bit by bit, the blackness started to fade, until the image of a grey, flat brick appeared.
"Well, go on!" urged another creepy voice. I ignored it and watched each brick appear until it made a road. Had I even opened my eyes, I would scream at the sight of myself standing on thin air, and fall into the water that was visible to the naked eye. My closed eyes showed me the path I should walk on, on the invisible path over the water. The instinct in my blood urged me in the right direction to walk over it. Now this wasn't any regular water; if I touched it just slightly, it would swallow me whole and make me disintegrate into nothing. Nothing was the opposite of everything, right? If I didn't know what everything was, then how was I supposed to know what nothing was? Focusing on the bridge in my mind, I stepped forward on the first brick I saw in my head. I tried to think of the image in my vision as what I was really looking at, which was hard when in reality, I felt absolutely nothing beneath me. I tried to be confident and took a huge gulp of air before I stepped on the next joined brick. I felt like I was floating in midair, but I knew there was no time to be wasted. I ran across the road without hesitating until it ended, and bit my lip and opened my eyes to see myself floating over a cliff. I turned around and gasped. The other side of the cliff was nearly the size of two houses away. There was nothing in between them but the deadly silent space of air, and the water, completely still and eager to eat someone up. I had walked over air! With my eyes closed! I grinned and jumped down from the air I was on to the cliff.
"Check your pulse!" yet another annoying voice hissed at me. I rolled my eyes, waited for my heart to slow down and placed my fingers on my wrist. I wished so desperately to be done and over with this quest, but I knew that wouldn't be happening for at least a hundred more years.
Should I continue? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Comment, and let me know what you think.
