Jacob's POV
"I see we have a guest. How nice," Leah said as if it was not nice at all, "What's for dinner? O negative, or AB positive?"
It was obviously an insult directed at Maia. I rolled my eyes. "Lasagna."
I knew Maia didn't eat. But it still felt weird to have her sit beside me at the table without any food. I felt guilty, like I was neglecting her.
And then I remembered her strange silences and it got that much worse.
I watched Leah pull a piece of lasagna out of the pan and put it on her plate. Then she came to sit at the table. As far away from Maia as she could. But she seemed strange today, too. She seemed almost... Happy?
Happy? Leah?
"Guess what," Leah said in her new cheerful tone. It caught everyone's attention because she never talked at the dinner table and she sounded happy. It was something nobody'd heard in almost two years.
"What is it, sweetie?" my mother asked. I glanced at Maia. She still looked sort of weird but also like she was trying not to laugh.
"Well, I got a call earlier today, and it turns out that... Sam's coming back to Forks!"
That was it for Maia's control. She started to laugh. Not like normal, but close. She didn't seem to be able to stop.
"What's it to you, leech?" Leah asked sarcastically, her mood immediately soured to normal.
Maia took a deep breath and managed to stop laughing. "You're just gonna let him back, after what he did to you? You're just gonna let it blow over, like nothing happened? Tell me this. Does Sam know you're a werewolf?" The haunted look came back into her eyes, the pain of the stare gave me goosebumps, though I was never cold.
"Of course not. I was human when we were last together. And besides, you told Jacob that you're a vampire."
"I didn't have a choice," she almost snarled, "He knew as soon as he saw me after he was a werewolf. I didn't want him to know. But he did. If your precious Sam turns out to be a vampire or a werewolf, so be it."
"You didn't want Jacob to know you were a leech because you already had a crush on him before he changed!"
Maia's teeth snapped together so hard that everyone in the room heard. She stood up so fast that her chair fell to the floor. She looked like she wanted to kill my sister. She growled under her breath and muttered something too quietly and too fast for me to understand. I knew Leah heard though, because she scowled. Maia didn't pay any attention to her as she stalked out of the room. I got up to go follow her.
She'd stopped on the porch. Waiting motionlessly for me. I stopped behind her.
"I'm sorry," she said. It sounded slightly too intense for the conversation, but I decided to overlook it.
"For what?" I asked.
"For ruining that ridiculous dinner party."
"It's not your fault."
"It's always my fault." she said. She sounded like she was apologizing for something other than that party.
"Leah should've known better."
"Sure," she said. She'd never turned, but I felt like something was gonna happen. Something terrible, life changing.
"Maia, what's wrong?" I asked, wishing I could help.
Maia just looked at the moon. "I've gotta go," she said with more pain than I would've imagined for such a simple sentence.
She turned to face me, and her expression was sad. She walked a few steps closer, and she kissed me. It wasn't precisely just a peck on the lips, and she was using more force than she usually would've. I didn't mind though.
She stepped back and I opened my eyes. "Goodbye Jacob," she whispered before she disappeared in the trees.
I felt a prick of pain as I always did when she was gone. Somehow, I got the feeling that this would just be the beginning.
