"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲."
If someone told Westin smith that he was allowed to have an ounce of happiness, he'd call them a goddam liar. Happiness comes in many forms, Friends, love, even food.
Experiencing happiness for Westin felt like a punishment, It felt wrong. Every time he'd feel like smiling or noticed his lips moving to form a smile, he'd try to stop it. He felt selfish to be even able to smile. He hasn't seen his mom smile in months. Rehab, doctor's appointment, blood work, repeat.
Those are all of the things him and his mom do. Not once does she smile. He doesn't give her a reason to. So what is he suppose to do when Arabella Davis smiles at him in the hallways or waves? He can't smile, can't be selfish. His mom's suffering from his mistakes, his choices. She Can barely look at him without feeling like she failed him.
Instead of a wave or a smile he nods. An act of acknowledgment is better than blank faces with cold eyes he gives everyone else. She doesn't seem bothered by it. Doesn't overthink it, doesn't ask why.
A nod was enough for them both.
"Westin man you listening?" Jude questions. Westin feels himself coming back, his surroundings are filled with loud kids and clinking treys being piled up. The lunchroom wasn't exactly his favorite place. "Not really" Westin shrugs. Everyone rolls their eyes except Arabella who does an amused half-smile. Westin sneaks a peek at her not a full-on glance, a peek. At least that's what he tells himself.
She wore her hair in a high ponytail, a few strands of hair would fall out in the back. She had to re-adjust it many times. Each time he'd catch her doing it. He liked seeing her hair fall onto her shoulders. Liked seeing her pull the hair back up so he could see her face better. "Westin for fucks sake can you pay attention!" Zamora yells while throwing tater tots at the young boys face. "We're having a movie night at Camden's you coming?"
All eyes traveled to Westin. "Sure" Leah sits up shocked, whenever they would have movie night she would beg him to come. His answer was always no. But now all of a sudden he agrees without her having to plead for him to go. Leah's eyes land on Arabella. She saw how Westin- no, how both of them looked at each other. How couldn't he look at her? she thought. Arabella is gorgeous, who wouldn't want to look at her.
"Great everyone come by at 8." Camden cheers before the bell rings signaling that lunch was over. Everyone bids there goodbyes except Westin. Leah almost missed it, so subtle that she was sure know one else saw. Arabella does a smile in his direction, Westin gives a nod in hers.
Westin doesn't even look at Leah in the halls. Always focused on getting to his next class. Never stopping to talk.
The gears in Leah's mind turn, her thoughts confused.
