1. Free as a bird

This plane ride seems almost surreal. The air conditioning does not work as it should; all passengers keep their heads down... nobody wants to look out the window. There's no child screaming nor any embarrassed parent. Of course, there are some mothers among us, but for the most part they are crying or staring into the void.

My bladder has been begging me to be emptied for almost half an hour – how is that possible since I haven't even wetted my lips in more than eight hours?! – but I'm determined not to leave my place for much longer. Even if I wanted to, getting out of here would be way too difficult. I should get the attention of one of the few guards watching us, ask to be escorted to the bathroom, and try not to stumble in front of the rest of the passengers who are still handcuffed. No, it's not worth it. If this plane doesn't crash before it arrives at its destination, it will land in two hours. I can make it.

What a ridiculous situation. Six months ago I was as free as a bird, living for today and feeling invincible. Nothing scared me. No matter what the challenge was, no matter the dangers I could stumble into. And then, in the blink of an eye, it all ended. Freedom, light-heartedness, happiness. I was left only with one thing: love. Ironic that it's exactly this love that dragged me to the bottom, into an abyss where light does not filter and all that remains is bitterness.
