On Saturday morning, New styled Tay and waved him off at the garage door. Then he called Kay on the porch. The flowers in front had grown almost to his calves. Tay must be proud of himself.

"Pretty boy."

"The lion has left the den, I repeat the lion has left the den. It's safe now. Over."

"I don't think the lion leaving the den is safe for anyone."

"Shut up. Go with it."

He sighed. "Alright, I'll be there in 30 or less. Over." It was Kay's day off. New hadn't met him since he left his apartment 3 months ago. He insisted on meeting today because he had major news.

"Bring a pizza and some ice cream. Over."

"Way ahead of you man. Over and out."

Kay arrived 26 minutes later. New took the pizza and ice cream and carefully set them on the swing. Then lunged into his best friend's arms. They sank to the floor, laughing.

"God I've missed you," New confessed, teary-eyed.

"The house is as ugly as you said."

"Shut up, say you've missed me too."

"You know I miss you, pretty boy."

New stood up first and hauled Kay up. "What's the important news?" He led the way inside.

"What's the hurry?" Kay asked. "Show me your room first." They climbed the stairs to New's room. Kay whistled as he looked around. "This is pretty cool. The inside of the house is very different from the outside."

"I thought the same thing. I wonder why that is."

"Probably one of his weirdo shit," Kay commented. He sat in the bed and pulled New into his lap. "I'm here now. Tell me all the shit the dark lord put you through."

He shifted until he was comfortable in Kay's lap.  "Not so much lately. He has been different, nicer. He speaks to me in full sentences and he asks me about myself. I think he's beginning to trust me."

"Don't get too comfortable." Kay reached for the box of pizza on the nightstand. "From what you've been telling me, he has mood swings. He could fire you any day. It's better to lose an employer than a friend." He took out a slice and held it to New's lips.

"It's not so easy, Kayavine." He opened his mouth to accept the food.

"It's pretty easy. You're just so stubborn." Kay held his eyes. Whispered, "You don't like him right?"

He gave it some thought as he chewed. He swallowed and nodded. "I think I do. Not in the way you're implying. You don't live with someone for this long and not like them."

"It's possible. I know people who hated their roommates. Husbands who couldn't stand their wives." He brushed his clean knuckles tenderly over New's cheeks. "You've always been different from everyone."

New took the hand. He entwined their fingers. "You're acting weird." He observed. "Weirder than usual."

"I got a job, Newwiee. A good one."

"That's great Kay."

"I know." He nodded. His smile was thin. "I'm gonna be a web developer."

"Holy shit!" New exclaimed. He was almost bouncing in his friend's lap. "You've wanted this since forever."

"I know."
