Luna sat in bed, looking at the moon through her barred window. She slowly sat up, wincing at each loud creak of the bedsprings. She quickly jumped off the bed, making a creaking noise on the floor. This would be much easier if this whole place wasn't a wreck, she thought. Walking down the squeaky corridor, she knocked on the nurse's office. The circles under her eyes would help pretend she was sick. The door was flung open, and the nurse, a squat ugly creature that looked like a witch, came out.
"What on earth are you doing up at this time of night?" growled the nurse.
"Uh- ooh, I feel really sick," groaned Luna. "I think I'm gonna barf."
The nurse glared at her and stuck a finger towards the nearest cot, and Luna trudged over there.
"Don't you dare move from that spot while I go check on the mistress," said the nurse. Luna gave one last fake groan, and the nurse walked away. Luna grinned. Her plan was working flawlessly. Gently stepping out of the cot, she avoided anywhere she thought might make a noise that would call the nurse back. She slowly slid herself over the open windowsill and looked down. The bush she would land in had never looked so nice and comforting. Draping her legs over the end of the windowsill, she tensed her heels against the brick wall of the orphanage, preparing to jump. Suddenly, she heard the tapping heels of the nurse coming back. It's now or never, she thought. Without a glance back, she jumped off of the sill into the bush. She started to laugh and picked the leaves and branches out of her clothes and hair.
"STOP!" she heard the nurse yell. Uh-oh, she thought. She must've seen me jump. She ran towards the open gates, which were starting to close. The nurse's yell had alerted the mistress, and she had started to close the gates. Heart pounding, Luna ran as fast as she could towards those gates, nearly a split second too late. She wriggled through the small gap in the gates. She slumped down and took gasps of air, gasps of the scent of freedom. She heard people yelling from inside the orphanage, and started running away, running from the place that she had always hated.
