It was a normal day for Karen, doing her day to day job of picking up and dropping off kids from school to home from home to school but little did she know her life would change forever that day. One of her favorite students Isabella got on the bus with a gift for her after her last day of un person classes. When she saw John it was love at first sight. She made eye contact with his beautiful, glossy green and maroon leafs and couldn't wrap her head around how one plant could be so... breathtaking... so... beautiful- it was almost too much for her to handle in that moment.
Isabella,Liam and jack were all frequent riders on her bus who always sat in the front to chat but she "tuned them out" most of the time... or did she. Karen heard everything with her phenomenal hearing, the kids didn't need to know that though. She knew all of their deepest darkest secrets, memories and trauma all because when they were convinced she was tuned out she would listen the most.
The day that Izzy brought John on the bus is the day that Karen decided that she has had enough driving with kids. John and his thick shiny leafs is all she needed. Then suddenly out of nowhere she hears her worst fear. Dirt hitting the floor. She looked to the isle and there he was. On his side. His dirt everywhere. Unable to do anything she begged jack to pick him up with tears in her eyes, fearing that she had just lost the love of her life. As jack picked poor John up he noticed the tears streaming down his dear old bus drivers face as to which he said "u good Karen..?" And she replied with a forced smile "oh yes honey I'm ok.." but she really wasn't.
After that scare with John she had jack out him between seats to be sure she wouldn't loose her one and only. Was it less comfortable for John? Yes but it's what was needed to be done to keep him safe. She couldn't imagine the pain she would feel if she lost him.
After jack got off the bus she did her final drop off and pick up of the day with the younger kids and went on her way to the bus barn where she would park the bus for summer and for the last time. She wept openly to John about leaving the kids she had been driving for years. John knew exactly how to comfort her. He sat there being pretty like he knew exactly what she was talking about. His green and maroon leafs started to droop with Karen's sobs. He felt pure pity for the woman, one because she was crying and ranting to a plant and two he genuinely felt horrible for what had happened. He loved Karen more then she would ever know.
Karen and John went everywhere together after that day. Church, home and even to her kids house. Karen's kids were worried about her sanity because "why in the world would you bring a house plant everywhere with you" but what they didn't understand was that John was not just a houseplant. He was a kind, beautiful, funny, cute houseplant that was always there for Karen when she needed him.
As the years went on Karen and John went on many many adventures together until something... changed. Karen woke up to see big brown spots All over John and she knew immediately what it was. She tried her best to save him from the fungus infection growing on his leafs by trimming them. She tried every possible thing she could to save him but she saw it too late. All she wanted was to grow old together, get married, have that special bond with him, was that too much to ask? Karen stayed up that night with him. Preying to god that she would find some way to save the love of her life.
She woke up the next morning on the floor cuddling John. To her horror John had passed away sometime in the night. She sobbed until her eyes couldn't form tears anymore and realized there was only one thing she could do now. Say goodbye.... For now ;)
