Why do we have a battle cry?

To alert the enemy that we are about to attack?

No, to give strength to our loved ones about to give their life on the battlefield. ...

Sounds of cries carried across the blood soaked field. Bodies of horses and men lay upon the once untouched ground, now unrest souls haunt the land. War is not pretty nor is it a safe place, especially for a young prince to find himself submerged in a battle against Viking and men. Gods against god as the two fought for their own rights and the only thing keeping this young prince safe was a crippled heathen king.

"Ivar!" Igor cried out when he suddenly found himself alone on the field surrounded by his enemies. Where was Ivar? He said he'll stay by his side.. "Ivar!!" The boy dropped to his knees when he saw a sword come swinging towards him. His eyes met with the stranger's, fear struck his eyes as the two stared at each other, both too afraid to take the hit. But the enemy had a duty to his king. The young man Kicked Igor to the ground as he aimed his sword at the boy mercilessly.

Caught somewhere in the battlefield with naught but the angry gazes of his enemies. Fear stricken men each time Ivar's intense eyes met them. Blood poured from either direction as the Pagan continuously had to keep the blood from his eyes. Cutting down the warriors in their path as some fought for their life as others welcomed their god like sheep. Ivar laughed maniacally with each swing of his sword.

The heathen king looked to his side, keeping Igor in eyesight, that's when fear struck him. Igor wasn't there, in all the chaos Ivar must have lost him. Then he heard him call. In that moment Ivar became the most scared in all the battlefield, even more scared than Igor was right now. Ivar turned to locate the child. Heistingly and frantically searching, following his voice. "Igor!! Igor!" He cried. Finally after what felt like a lifetime of searching, he found the boy. On the ground with his enemy above him. "Don't you dare!!" The heathen shouted as he tossed an axe right into the stranger's back, unable to walk fast enough to them. Once Ivar reached Igor he was already pushing the body off him. Ivar fell to his stomach and got on top of Igor for protection as many in the battlefield went past them. "Are you ok, my child? Get up!"

"Ivar!" The young prince cried out as he flung his arms around the older man, burying his head into Ivar's chest to block out the sounds of screams and bloodshed while the heavy footsteps and clanging of swords echoed through the battlefield surrounding the two. "I'm fine." Igor replied as he forced himself to leave the comfort of his pagan and get up, facing the battle once more.

The pagan also stood to his feet. Then grabbing the child and pulling him close to his chest to feel his warmth. The two now faced the deadly bloodshed before them as warriors fell like the fallen leaves upon the trees. Ivar roughly turned the boy over, he didn't mean to be so rough, but in the heat of the moment it was hard to find gentleness within himself. "Do not look at them! Do not! I want you to fight for what you believe in Igor! Fight for us ok? Fight for your kingdom! Never give them the chance to cut you down and for the love of the gods stay with me!"

"Okay...I trust you, Ivar. You give me the strength to fight, and if you live I'll have the will to stand my ground for your love is what I fight for." The young prince said softly as he wrapped his arms around the cripple, hugging him tightly as he dared not shut his eyes so he wouldn't miss a single moment as if it were his last. The boy stood close to his pagan, drawing his sword towards their enemies, trying not to let death bring him sorrow. He moved with Ivar whenever he needed, staying by his side, watching his back as each stranger approached the cripple from behind to attack.
