Prologue

Obviously, it was a terrible idea from the start. I told my best friend as much, but she ignored me, as per usual. Going on a double date with men from online that we had never met before, in a city that we had never been in seemed like the worst possible idea. Once she got an idea in her though, Claire was not one to give it up. Before I could even have a chance to object, she had already contacted the guy, and found a friend for me. Unfortunately. But she knew me so well that she knew there was no way I was going to let her go by herself, so apparently I had to go with her. Anyway, that was Monday, now it was Wednesday, and I was doing by best to convince Claire that we shouldn't go, and I only had a day and a half left to do it. Before that though, I had to convince my mother that Claire and I were thriving, and that we were too responsible to die by slipping up some random stairs somewhere.

"Yeah mom, we're doing laundry. . . yeah, I do change that cat litter. . . stop worrying mom. It's literally been three years since we moved out, I'm not sure why you think we can't take care of ourselves. Yes, I appreciate you checking in, but you could ask me how is going instead of asking how I'm still alive. . . . yeah, work is fine. I mean it's work, I'm stuck doing it till I can find a rich husband. Yeah, I know that would make you very happy. Mom, I've gotta go - . . .no, I'm going, I have to go to bed, I have work tomorrow. Yeah, love you too. Ok, bye."

I put the phone down and rubbed my temples. You would think I was freshman in college, the way that she constantly called me to see if I was alive and well. Meanwhile I had been a freshman in college about seven years ago, and moved out as soon as I graduated. It was never me she had to worry about anyway, it was always my siblings. Always getting into trouble, those kids.

Nowadays I was progressing at work, and Claire and I were getting ready to move into bigger place for the sake of having more room to get away from each other.

"Savannah, where are you?"

"I'm in the kitchen Claire, what's up?"

She sauntered into the kitchen holding up two pretty decent looking dress. I squinted at them, and her.

"Why are those so nice? Where are we meeting these guys on Friday? I thought this was gonna be like an Applebee's kind of deal."

Claire had the audacity to roll her eyes at me.

"They're taking us to Ivory Wave, y'know, that place on the water? Do you have no concept of free food?"

This girl was going to be the death of me. "So what you're telling me is that not only do I have to get dressed up and look decent, but I also have to trek all the way to Ivory Wave? That's like an hour and a half away."

"So anyway, what do you think? I could wear this red one, or the pink."

Claire held the dresses against her body, and not for the first time I envied the way that she could effortlessly wear anything. She came out of the womb with good genes, while I had to struggle my way into feeling like I looked even half-way decent. Her red dress mid-thigh length, with cut outs at the top and sleeveless, while her pink dress dipped in the back to just above her butt, and was floor length. "Definitely the red one. That looks stunning with your skin tone, especially since you're darker than you usually are too."

She smiled widely. "Ugh, you're right. Love that for me. Now what about you?"

I shooed her away from me. "You know me, It'll be something black, and short, as per usual."

"A dress?"

"Yes, yes, it'll be a dress, I promise."

"Ok great! Ahhh, I can't wait!!" She twirled out of the room, as though she was walking on air.

I laughed a little, then stopped short. Once again, she had distracted me from the fact that I was supposed to be convincing her that this double date was a bad idea in the first place. Another point to her damn it.

AN: Heyyyyyyy, it's me again. After basically a year, I'm back with a new story. This is just going to be a short one, hopefully, that I'm also attempting to publish on Amazon when I'm done, so keep an eye out. With that in mind, I'm probably not going to publish all of the parts here, but that remains to be seen. As always, thanks for reading!
