I never asked for this.
I never wanted this.
So why...
Did it have to happen?
I sit here at my desk, thinking about my life. Quite an unusual one, most would say. Not for me. The apocalypse is all I've ever known, from my moment of birth to the present, and most likely, when I die, it will be all I would have known still. Yet I still have a glimmer of hope, even when there is no other life left, my parents are stuck in bed with a deadly virus (which had apparently been eradicated long ago), and I am stuck here, not even knowing how to cook a single meal. I desperately need someone to take care of me, but there's no one except me, my parents and the gaping wasteland full of plastic and broken glass that is the rest of the world outside my window. I trudged to my parents bedroom, but hesitated when I was about to open the door. Do I visit them today? They said I shouldn't, that they don't want me to catch it too. But, they've gotten worse, and this might be the only chance I get to see them before they...
I open the door, my heart beating out of my chest.
Huh, they're not breathing. How odd.
Wait, no pulse? No nothing?
Mother! Father!
