Thousands of years previous...

Link grinned at Demise, his hair flowing with the wind. "I am the hero of the sky, Hylia's chosen! I cannot be defeated by you demon! Begone from this world!" The sword in his hand, empowered by the three flames of the Golden Goddesses glowed a bright blue hue, it's excitement making it glow brighter by the second, spoke.

"I, Fi, the Master Sword, Sword that seals the Darkness, am ready, Master. End this foul demon!" With those words, Link plunged the sword deep into Demise's corroded heart, and Zelda recited the spell that would send this demon to Hell.

With a final breath, Demise choked out his last words. "Hero and Princess, let us be locked in a cycle that will last for eternity! Even as I am long dead, let my hatred of you and the goddesses revive every hundred years, forcing your descendants to suffer! And you yourselves may wither and die of age, sickness, or battle, but you will be forced to return from the heavens above, forced into a mortal body once more, all memories of the past lives forgotten, to fight with my hatred forever!" With his curse cast Demise fell silent. Link looked at Zelda, mortified by what he had just heard.

"Link, what we thought would be the end is now only the beginning. We cannot beat a curse made by the true Demon King himself, when it was expelled from his body with his last breath. We can only do one thing. We must prepare the world for the new demon king's arrival, so that his death will be swift, and Hyrule will continue with prosperity." Link looked at Zelda. Zelda had always been so very kind and loving, and she only wanted what was best for this new land of Hyrule. He figured that was what made him love her so much.

"On the bright side Zel, this demon king is dead! We can finally be happy together!" They were pulled into an embrace, lips inches apart and closing...

                                                                                    ✶✶✶

A boy awoke suddenly, to a sharp pain in his neck. It had happened again. He had tossed and turned during the night, and fallen off of the bed, tearing his conscious mind away from the dream. It had been all too realistic.

"Link! You need to get up! I thought you were the perfect soldier, but if you are late to your acceptance ceremony, then you will not even achieve the title of knight! You are the first commoner in 100 years to receive this title, and you are not going to screw it up! Out!" His maid, Mary whacked his butt with a broom. "Out with you!"

Link groaned, but did as he was told. "I'm going, I'm going, Ok? Sheesh!" His little remark got him a second hit on the butt. "Sorry!!!" He ran out the door, wearing the exact same clothes as the day before. A green cap, a green tunic, white leggings, and two brown boots. Link ran at top speed through the forest, since he knew that the castle hall and the ceremony that would be starting in fifteen minutes was 4 kilometers away. There was no way he could make it. Unless...

                                                                                    ✶✶✶

Link peeked his head out from behind the shed at the horse cart in front of him. He had tried this several times before, each time ending with disastrous results. Groose had laughed at him every time as he hit the dirt road painfully. Even with his pain, he always laughed too, with his friend. This time though, with a stroke of luck, it might work. He had always tried to improve his tactics, but something always would be off. He was never brave enough to whip the reigns. He figured that if he did that it would hurt even more if he fell off, since he would be flung even farther. But he had to try once more. This was his only idea of how to make it in time. Link ran at the horse cart, grabbed the reigns, whipped them as hard as he could, and yelled "YAH!" With this sudden yell, the horses attached to the cart ran forwards. Link steered them towards the road, with a sudden yell said to the sleeping owners in the house "I'll return these later! YAH!"

Ten minutes later...

The door to the main hall burst open as the green clothed man kicked them in, sprinting to his spot. He slipped and slid, but was quickly lifted up by some strong arms. Link looked up, into a grinning face. "Slick, Link. 9 points for speed, and 3 points for style. That's a record!" Groose laughed, but was quickly silenced. The ceremony had started. The King stood up.

"You all know why you are here! You are our new Hylian knights! You are the best of the soldiers, and you are going to be recognized for your strength! You are now knighted, and you are all sirs! Servants! Give the knights their armor!"

"Yes my lord!" The servants rushed out into our ranks and gave us the armor. Groose slipped into his snuggly. Link, the scrawny commoner he was, couldn't manage to put this on, so he handed it back to the servants, who gave him an odd look and headed out."

The king continued his speech after this brief pause. "You have all received your armor! You will all be protected from monster, but you will not be invincible. Especially not the young man who seems to think that he is. What is your name, and why have you interrupted the ceremony in this way?" He motioned to Link, and everyone stared at him.

Link knew he had to be very careful about this. "My lord, I apologize for interrupting this amazing ceremony. I was unable to fit in the armor with my thin body. If you have any smaller armor, I will gladly accept it and be as protected as the rest of my company."

The king laughed out loud. "Smaller armor? The armor provided is the smallest we have, because your company is not as big in size as the much more fit knights who have worked out and fought thousands of monsters over the years. I cannot give you anything better, so I suppose you will be in danger for the rest of your fighting life. I give you this rare chance to leave the ranks of the Hylian military. The choice is up to you."

Link grinned up at the king. "I made my choice when I devoted my life to becoming the greatest swordsman who had ever lived. I cannot bring myself to leave the place I have devoted my time and effort to. I remain loyal to the military."

The king looked at Link with a bit of anger and curiosity in his eyes. "Good. Now, to commence with the ceremony. Give the soldiers their swords and their shields."

The servants flooded the ranks once again, a solemn silence coming from them. Receiving the sword meant that you were in the military, and you could no longer leave. Everyone was offered the sword of their choice. Link, last in line, was offered one choice. A greatsword. That was it. He took the sword, a rage building inside him. He looked at the king, and the king had a looked of insane glee in his eyes. Link, the commoner, greatest swordsman of them all, who had trained with a rapier his entire life, had been forced to accept a greatsword, which was practically a polar opposite. Link's shield was also way too heavy for him. Link grimaced. He had no choice but to accept this discrimination. He could not oppose the royal family, even if he had a rapier in hand and was fighting at full power. His life mana boiled inside. He wanted to fight!

The king continued his speech with these final words. "You all are nobles, except for one. All nobles have a chance to attempt drawing the master sword. Unfortunately, this means that the commoner Link, will be unable to have an attempt. He will remain here. Now, the rest of you, line up for your attempt, in order of status.

Groose, in the back of the line, looked at Link with a sad stare. "Sorry dude. I can't help you this time. You're on your own." Then he walked off, leaving Link to boil in disgrace.
