I opened my eyes. There was a lake, sparkling in the sunlight. I realized I was standing on a reef that was competely dry as if something had drunk it all. There was chaos all around me, but I heard nothing. My boyfriend, Kyle Jenkins, was standing at the edge of the reef. I called his name. He turned around, smiled at me, and waved me over. Now, there was a crowd gathering next to him. I tried to ask him a question, but no words came out of my mouth. He didn't notice. We stayed by the edge of the reef for what seemed like ages, him being the only one speaking, though I heard none of it. All of a sudden, the ground began to shake. The crowd surrounding us hurriedly dispersed as something erupted from the water. As soon as I realized what it was, I wanted to run. I wasn't sure where to, I just knew we had to go. I tried to call out to Kyle but no sound came out of my lips. Desperate, I ran back to where he stood, standing like a statue at the edge of the reef as an enormous human being rose up from the depths of the now murky water. I tried to pry him away from the edge, but he wouldn't move, it was like he was glued to that one spot. I tried to snap him out of his trance, but he just stood there, eyes open wide, mouth hanging open. Tear after salty tear began to flow down my face and falling off the cliffside as the enlarged man waded our way. I knew I was screaming my lungs out though he heard nothing. I couldn't even hear myself. I collapsed by his feet, tired and spent. He still stood there, not responding to anything. My vision became blurred with tears and the salt from the sea spray of the ever closer giant. I could smell the stench of a million years worth of bacteria and trash that made it's way down to the bottom of the ocean, where the creature had come from.
I cried and cried, not knowing what to do. My boyfriend was all that I had. He was everything to me. He was there when my mother passed away five years ago. He was there when my father died of drug and alchohol overdose three years ago. His family took me in when none of my relatives wanted to take care of me. He promised he'd always be there to protect me from my fears, and here I was sitting next to him, waiting for the giant to come and eat us both. I was pathetic compared to him. Weary, and still crying, I got up and interloped my fingers with his. I whispered an unauidible, "I'm sorry." As the creature lunged for us, miniscule compared to it. It's sharp nails slashed Kyle's chest, who didn't flinch, or move. He made no sound as he fell over the side, bright red blood gushing out of his wounds. After that, all I remember seeing was a dark red sea of blood as the creature ate victim after victim. I could hear the crunch as it tore the innocent limb from limb. I could hear the shouts from each of the helpless people dangling from itʻs fingers. But most of all, I could hear myself screaming Kyle's name over and over again wishing it was me who was killed, wishing that he was still alive, wishing that I had never believed my dreams were real.
