Hello, my name is Anthony Delgado. This report is about the Bunsen Burner Practical. In this experiment, i will measure the time it takes for water to boil on a bunsen burner. As such, my main question is: How long does it take for water to boil when heated by a Bunsen Burner? I personally think it won’t last long.

To do this experiment, you’ll need:

A Bunsen Burner A place that provides gas matchsticks a pen paper a beaker a thermometer a tripod a timer of a phone with a timer-app

A Bunsen Burner works with gas, so you’ll have to be very careful.

To light a Bunsen Burner, you’ll have to:

- Make sure the oxygen-disk is closed.

- Make sure the gas knob is closed.

- Now, open the gas inlet.

- Now you have to light a match. Don’t take too long, the gas is still flowing in the room!

Light the gas. You have now successfully lighted a Bunsen Burner. Turn the roaring flame(The visible, orange one) to a blue silent flame. You do this by opening the oxygen disk put the tripod above the Bunsen Burner. Fill the beaker with 100 ML of water. put the thermometer in the beaker. let it rest on the spout(the pointy part). turn the spout away from you. put the timer on 30 seconds. make a graph. After every 30 seconds, write down the amount of time since the first test, the temperature(celsius).

My results were as following:

amount of time   temperature(celsius)    does it boil?

0:30                           43                                   no

1:00                           58                                   no

1:30                           71                                   no

2:00                           88                                    no

2:30                           95                                   no

3:00                           100                                 no

3:30                           107                                yes

after every 30 seconds, i recorded the temperatures and time. Since the water is heating up, it was hard to write the exact number after 30 seconds, as it kept rising.

My conclusion is: The amount of time in which water starts to boil is affected by the Bunsen Burner.

I think because of the amount of gas flowing in the flame is hotter than the fire you cook on in a kitchen. This experiment has answered my main question. At home, it takes on average ten minutes for water to boil, while on a Bunsen Burner it takes only three and a half minutes.

I did make some mistakes. I wasn’t fast enough to write the correct temperature, and sometimes i forgot to start the timer in time. Other than that, it went pretty good. Next time though, i need to be more cautious.
