"The cobblestones are slippy you know!" I groaned at my parents from the ground. Ms. Devonshire had left us for a few minutes to take care of super-top-secret-business that no matter how much I pestered, she couldn't tell me about. She had told us to walk down the street and get my robes, which we had done, but on the way back up to meet her I had slipped. And now my parents were doubled over laughing at me as I sat on the cold ground.
Grumbling, I shook my hair out of my face and walked on ahead to the apothecary, where we were meeting Ms. Devonshire. She had told us it was called Dragon's Eye, meaning I was already excited to go in. There was an apothecary in the village back home, but all they sold was herbs, like lavender and sage and rosemary. I figured this one would be a bit more interesting, with it being magic and all.
We finally got there, and my parents regarded it with wary eyes before going in. Inside, the walls were filled with jars of all sorts of things, and the jars were labelled. While Ms. Devonshire ordered my potions kit for school, I strolled along the walls, reading The labels like essence of murtlap, and Monkswood.
As I strolled, I forgot to look where I was going, and gasped when I hit something hard. Looking down, I saw a girl, about my age and looking just as surprised as me. I opened my mouth to apologise, and as I did I helped her up.
When she was up, the girl stuck out her hand. "I'm Rachel Nott. What's your name?"
"Madelyn Brooks. But you can call me Maddie."
She smiled at me, and asked if I was new to magic.Fifteen minutes later,
Rachel had shown me all around the shop, explaining what some of the basic ingredients were for. We had also learned all about each other, and agreed to sit together on the train.
Just then, my parents started waving me over, so I said my goodbyes.○●□■○●□■○●□■○●□■
I was in a dark, circular room, standing by a cobblestone wall. The centre of the room was illuminated, and there was something small in the middle. As it started to cry, I realised that it was a baby, and ran over to pick it up.
When my hands passed through it, I stepped back in shock. Even as I did so, a whisper-shout joined the baby's cries.
I looked behind me, only to see a girl of maybe five or six calling my name. I walked over to her, but again, she walked right through me without even blinking.Instead, she picked up the baby and started rocking it. So she could touch the baby. Either these two were ghosts, or I was a ghost.
The baby stopped crying, and the older girl set her down. Before she could make it out the door, the double oak doors at the other end of the room slammed open, and a man in a hood rushed in. He grabbed the older girl by the hair and dragged her out. Not long after, I heard shrill screams from upstairs, which set the baby off crying again.○●□■○●□■○●□■○●□■
I shot awake to my alarm. What the hell just happened?
Shaking the last remains of the dream off me, I got out of bed. It was a Monday, the last week of the summer holidays. I was surprisingly calm about going to a completely different country in six days. Ms. Devonshire had explained that I could write home when I liked.
