First Dance

“Are you sure about this?" His silvery eyes locked on a painting on the wall, lips taunt.

"Positive." I slipped my ballet flats off at the door as I led him toward the middle of the room.

His delicate nose scrunched, "But I'll only step on your feet."

"Don't be ridiculous, Allen!" I laughed. I stopped and spun to face him with a mischievous smile. "You're English! It's in your blood. Stop worrying!"

When your legs don't work like they used to before, and I can't sweep you off of your feet.

 

I held out my hand. A red tint flushed across his face as he took it. I placed his so-called cursed hand on my hip, which only deepened the shade of his face. The soft cotton of his sleeve tickled my palm as I slid my hand up to rest on his shoulder.

Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?

His other hand tentatively raised to meet mine, suspended in mid-air.

Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?

First step; left foot back. Next, the right. Always careful.

Darling I will be loving you 'till we're seventy.

A light prod from the fingers on my hip. I step to the left, and we turn ninety degrees.

And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23.

The tense muscle of his upper arm relaxed to the shape of my grasp.

I'm thinkin' bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways.

Another turn.

Maybe just the touch of a hand.

His fingers laced between mine.

His eyes finally rose from our feet to meet mine.

The hand on my waist crept, nervously, across the purple silk to the middle of my back. Sparks seemed to fill the spaces where we almost touched.

Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars.

His gaze darted to my rose-coloured lips.
