"Mommy, look at this," Fiorenzo held his drawing to his mother. It looked like scribbles along with a few circles with eyes, to Fiorenzo it was him and his mother. "Look what I drew, mommy!"
His mommy looked over to the bouncing boy, with a smile as she took away the drawing to see.
"Is this us, Fiorenzo? Keep this up, and you can be an artist one day." The boy grinned bashfully, a light pink decorating his still chubby cheeks. "I'll just tape this to the fridge, okay? Dinner is almost ready, so go set the table."
A hungry look showed on his face as he ran to complete the task as quickly as possible, "Fiorenzo, careful not to rush, you could hurt yourself."
"Okay!" She smiled, and turned off the oven, and pulled out the baked pasta with her oven mitts.
She placed the food in the middle of the table on a heat-absorbent pad, Fiorenzo eagerly watched her. He became impatient as she slowly scooped out a handful and placed it on his plate, and she did the same for hers.
In sync, they placed their hands together to pray and thank God for their meal. Then they dug in, it was a quiet dinner like always. Once they were finished, his mom cleared up the plates and utensils and placed them in the sink.
His mom walked away to tape his drawing on the fridge, which was already cluttered with his other drawings. She took the stacked boxes on top of the counter and sat them in front of the anticipating boy. "Happy birthday 5th birthday, Fiorenzo!"
"Thanks, mommy!" He smiled as she opened the flap of the box to reveal a decorated Cassata cake. She cut them both a slice of cake, and they both dug into the delicious cheese-filled cake.
"Open your present while I run you a bath," she said walking upstairs.
Fiorenzo stared at the second box with excitement and opened it. Inside was a book called The Robber's Cave by A.L.O.E, next to it was a crafted figure.
A doll of some sorts with button eyes and coils of yarn for hair, with hand-sewed polo shirt and trousers with suspenders, and shiny boots. It looked like him.
There were toy trains, a custom: mug; and a red brush. His mother respected his wishes of not cutting his hair short, and some ribbons to tie his hair back.
Underneath them was a folded outfit, the spitting image of the doll's clothes with boots, dress coat, and tie added.
It looked like a uniform of some sort.
"Fiorenzo, time for your bath," the boy was distracted by his mother's voice and ran upstairs, "Did you like the present?"
His mother asked him just as he walked into the bathroom, she helped him strip out of his clothes, "Yeah I like them...but why was there a uniform?"
She went quiet, throwing his dirty clothes into the laundry bin, then tears welled up in her eyes, spooking Fiorenzo, "I'm sorry, my son, but I have to send you away."
"WHAT?!.... WHY?!" He panicked, did she decide she didn't want him anymore?! "Did I do something wrong, mommy...I'm sorry for I did, I want to stay with you!"
"Fiorenzo, I'm not getting rid of you. I love you so much, but it isn't my choice." She said, sobbing as she embraced her upset and crying child. "The government decided to send you away."
"The government...why are they doing this?" he whimpered, she wiped away his tears.
"We are living in difficult times, there is a war going on right now. Italy is allied with Germany, Japan. Russia betrayed us. America has joined the war. This war is massive and dangerous. Now think of this as an opportunity, they are giving you a chance at education, this will keep you safe. I'm technically still married to my husband as he didn't finalize the divorce. We are alright in pretending."
"All middle to the high-class citizen children will go to institutions to learn. You have to leave first thing in the morning, okay? Listen to the adults, don't give them a reason to hurt you. People have been punished for going against the government system. I taught you the basic education all children need to know, you'll be okay, I'll write to you whenever I can."
He said nothing but climb into the heated bathwater, 'Just what is going on? A war against multiple countries; and people being forced to do things they don't want; and is punished for going against the system. I wonder about the possibility of if Konoha will turn up like this in the near future,'
All he knows is that he should up his training. This life just became more difficult.
