It didn't take any time for Peggy to get a hold of Mr. Stark and talk him into flying Steve into the battlefield. I had to admit I was a little happier doing it this way knowing that we would be able to get Steve closer.
Once we met up with Stark and he showed us the plane we were going to go up in I knew that we would be able to do this. If anyone could be able to get us nearly on the front door it would be Stark.
I sat up front with Stark as Peggy and Steve where in the back of the plane going over what he was going to do.
"The Hydra camp is in Krausberg," Peggy said pointing at a map she had, "Tucked between these two mountain ranges. It's a factory of some kind."
"We should be able to drop you right on the doorstep," Stark reassured Steve, looking over his shoulder at him. I was looking around fascinated at all the switches and buttons that were surrounding me.
"Have you ever flown a plane before?" Stark asked me as he glanced at me, checking sensors and switches.
"Do I look like the type to have flown a plane?" I asked as I looked at him with my eyebrow cocked.
"Fair enough," he said as he shrugged, "Maybe once this war is over I can teach you a thing or two." I couldn't help the laugh that escaped me. Was he seriously flirting with me while we were flying through enemy territory?
"Agent Carter," he said over his shoulder again, "I thought maybe if you weren't in too much of a hurry the three of us could stop off in Lucerne for a late night fondue." I looked behind me at both Peggy and Steve. The look of embarrassment on Peggy's face said it all. I smacked Stark on the arm as he gave me a big smile.
"Are you sure this thing works?" Steve yelled up at Stark as Peggy handed him something.
"It's been tested more than you, pal," he replied.
"Well, that's comforting," I said when suddenly the plane jerked to the right, nearly throwing me out of my seat, "that's your cue Steve!" In an instant Steve was up and already at the door ready to jump.
"Flip that switch," Stark yelled to me pointing to my right. I turned around in time to see Steve jump out the plane as Peggy watched him for a moment before shutting the door and sitting back in the chair she had been previously. Stark was dodging the fire that was headed for us as best he could, the plane shaking and jerking from one side to the other every now and then.
Once he finally got the plane turned around and we were out of enemy territory we luckily weren't being shot at anymore. The plane ride was smooth with Stark showing me small things there and there about flying a plane.
"So, how about that fondue?"
...
The rest of the night was uneventful for the most part. Once we got back to the military camp most everyone had gone to bed for the night, except for Colonel Phillips. I sat on the wooden stage, trying to find a way to entertain myself. Waiting for Steve to get back had me on edge and sleeping was the last thing on my mind.
"Hey," I heard someone say softly in front of me. I looked up from the spot I had been staring at and saw none other than Peggy.
"Hey," I awkwardly said back to her.
"Couldn't sleep either I see," she said as she sat down next to me.
"No," I half laughed, "I'm too worried." She gave me a sympathetic smile.
"You and Steve are close," she said as she looked at me, "Worried would be an understatement."
"Very," I said with a smile, I leaned forward on my hands slightly, "Him and Buck are all I have."
