The first day of matches was finally over and Kuroo had decided that he did a pretty great job being nice to Kenma and Shoyo, he even managed his way through eating lunch with the two of them, as well as with Akaashi and Bokuto.
"KUROO!" when the third-year was walking back from the gymnasium toward the school building where the teens stayed, he was approached by an enthusiastic owl-like third-year, as well as the second-year who always accompanied him; he didn't even bother jogging behind his team captain at all.
"Bokuto, Akaashi," the black-haired teen stated as he identified his two friends. Of course, who else would be shouting at Kuroo with this much energy after an entire day of practice matches.
"I was wondering..." Bokuto started talking as he bent over to lean on his thighs as a way to catch his breath. "...If you wanted to train tonight like we did the other years?"
Kuroo had expected this question to come up already, it had become another part of the training camp's routine for the three of them. They would always use their free time after dinner to train for some more hours together. Last year Kuroo tried to get Kenma to join them every night, but the second-year would always turn him down with a simple excuse such as "I'm tired," or "I need to attend an event in this game I play," or "not now, maybe tomorrow." At the end of the week, the third-year had decided to give up on asking. He should have known the setter wasn't interested in practicing more than was necessary, even if it meant spending extra time with Kuroo.
"Yeah, okay," Nekoma's team captain replied to his friends. "Sounds good."
Akaashi who hadn't sped his pace also caught up to the two third-years; "Alright, let's clean ourselves up before dinner and meet up at the gymnasium a bit after then."
Kuroo nodded in response, he wasn't sure if he was actually feeling like practicing extra hours, but he didn't want to let the other two down, besides, it wasn't like he had anything better to do.
The three teens walked back to the school building together. Once they got there, they decided to split up so they could all shower before dinner. Kuroo didn't spend much time packing his supplies before he left for the showers. The third-year had taken off his shirt, to air out as he showered and had replaced it by swinging a towel around his neck.
What the team captain didn't see coming, however, was to be run into by someone as soon as he left the room. Kuroo only felt a shock, but Kenma fell backward due to the difference in their builds and sizes.
As soon as Kuroo regained his composure, he held out a hand toward his childhood best friend, "Be more careful, will ya? We need you alive to win." Kuroo instantly regretted saying what he did, it felt like a stupid remark to make and he should have come up with something else to say, like, something more witty or clever, but it was too late to take his words back now.
Kenma didn't seem to mind, actually, the second-year didn't even really seem to pay attention to his friend's words as he took the older teen's hand and used it to stand back up. "Kuroo, I was looking for you," the setter responded as if nothing had just happened.
Kuroo couldn't help but look at Kenma with a surprised look on his face, Kuroo didn't feel like Kenma had needed him at all lately, especially not now that the tangerine was here to hang out with. "Oh, you were?" the dark-haired teen finally managed to say out loud. "What do you need from me? I was actually about to take a shower," Kuroo immediately regretted his tone, it sounded like Kenma was bothering him when Kuroo actually felt the exact opposite of annoyance. "Care to join?" The third-year finally added in an attempt to make his response more playful, he even added a teasing grin, but he felt like it was too much. God, Kuroo was overthinking everything. He really should have stopped talking at that point.
