Out in the moon, Mikasa, for the first time in a while, sticks around with Jean and Levi as they ruminated over their simplest of desires.
Had this fanwork proofread, as well as the author's note and summary. I'm a perfectionist. Jean's my favorite character btw😌😌
" I don't think I have any desires. "
Jean glanced over at Mikasa as she spoke into the silence. Her face, gorgeous as it will always be, was making him livid as he didn't have the ability to read it. The following silence had him thinking whether to end their small talk or not. The moon was out and so were the dazzling stars. He remembered it and refused to end it all too soon.
" The walls are no place for dreamers. "
Jean blinked out his thoughts.
Mikasa adjusted the red fabric, she couldn't help but do so. She looked up at the evening sky with cold unimpressed eyes, the sight has done nothing to make her any less thoughtful.
" Really? " A hint of amusement was present in Jean's voice. " You don't have something to get drunk on? Not even marriage? " He held back a yawn.
" No. "
He smothered a laugh, however, the short response niggled oddly in the back of his head. He swallowed down a lump in his throat and then glanced over at her, shock and bewildered as she was looking straight into his eyes, as if she was trying to see the way he reacts. Gears seemed to turn in her head.
" Don't give me that look. " He directed his gaze to his lap.
Mikasa blinked in response.
" Save that look for 'Suicidal Bastard'. "
" I'll tell what you just said to Eren. " Her voice dropped into a whisper. Strands of hair fell into one eye as she stood up. Eren had excused himself to prep for the biggest mission yet in solitude.
" Mikasa, "
She brought her gaze back to him and raised a brow. Silence soon followed as Jean seemed to be struggling to find his voice. He cleared his throat and then forced himself to continue. " Tell Eren I'll make certain I'll steal his titan power if he ever lets the Survey Corps down. " Tiredness soon became apparent in his voice as he said so.
Mikasa chose not to respond as she seemed to take notice the way his voice rang out. She turned on her heels and carried on walking away from the scene.
-
Mikasa slid to a stop as she's found him on the same spot the following day. She couldn't help but wonder at times why all of a sudden he wants to strike a conversation with her, of all people. She sighed and settled down on the cobblestones.
" Jean. "
He nearly jerked away from his spot. " Mikasa, " He puffed. " Thought I heard you say minutes ago that you're busy pampering some petulant kid. "
She fought the urge to roll her eyes. " Let's just get this over with, " She looked out the corner of her eyes at him. " You wanted to talk, remember? "
" Right. " He raised a slender digit and scratched the bridge his nose. Gathering up the rest of his confidence, he turned to her and forced her to look him in the eye more forcefully than he meant it. " Uh, let me think... first. "
Mikasa shoved him away.
" I think I've forgotten what I was about to say here. " He gave a weak smile. He rubbed the back of his head and directed his gaze to find the Captain himself catwalking his way over into his view. He couldn't help but pushed himself to his feet and gave a quick salute, a gesture which Mikasa soon followed.
" I should've had midnight snacks while waiting for the pair of you to get outta my sight. " He looked between Mikasa and Jean with a disappointed look in his eyes. " Are you two done? "
" Captain, " Jean gave a weak smile. " I was about to have a discussion with Mikasa on the things we desire the most. "
Levi sent him a bewildered look, to which he added, " Feel free to join us. "
While Jean was pathetically struggling to cajole the Captain into joining them, Mikasa was trying to make out his expression. She narrowed her gaze and mentally noted the way the Captain's expression morphed imperceptibly into one of calm. They fell into silence as the faintest sound of wind soon reached their ears. The slight upward curve of Jean's lips as she tossed a glance his way, made her think he's already had an idea what his response will be.
Levi soon blinked out his thoughts. He walked up and leaned against the wall, fusing his eyes shut. " Desire, eh, brat? "
Jean and Mikasa's eyes widen in a mixed of anticipation and disbelief as he hummed in thought, well-aware of their gazes. " I used to have at least one of those. "
Settling back down with rapt attention, Mikasa let him continued. Jean's mouth, however, opened and closed a couple of times, words desperate to come out like a semen forcing its way out from its member, but she simply silenced him with a scowl. She seemed to found herself to be also curious about the Captain, though, not as much as Jean.
" Simple as it was, I decided to give up on it, when I met Erwin and his set of beliefs. "
Jean couldn't help but raised one hand. " Captain, what was the dream you gave up on? "
The question flashed through his mind, but just like always, he gave them the same unreadable look as he relented, " My dream was to set up a dog shelter. That was another time. " He sighed.
" Captain's a dog person? Since when? " Jean exclaimed, and Mikasa couldn't help but hold back a scowl at the volume. " This is some news!! "
" It's nice. " The younger Ackerman nodded to affirm with his statement, a hint of shyness in her voice as she turned her gaze away from the Captain.
" Me? " Jean asked, mostly himself. " I think I'm already living my dream. "
Mikasa raised a brow, but Jean was more than happy to let on and answer her questioning look. " My dream was to fight Titans alongside the Commander and his squad. I think they deserve appreciation from the royal government and civilians more than they think. " He smiled as he looked over at the Captain. " Now that I'm one of them, I can make that happen by simply helping them in any way I can."
" Can you stand behind your words, brat? " Levi scoffed.
Jean gave a weak smile and then flickered his gaze back to Mikasa. He laid his hands at his sides, by doing so, he nearly felt the brush of her hands on the warmer weight of his own. " How about you, Mikasa? " He cleared his throat.
Levi raised a brow as he finally opened one eye, slightly curious.
Mikasa didn't seem to like the attention the question had suddenly grabbed as she adjusted her scarf. A light wind blowing her raven-black hair gently out of place, she breathes in and directed her attention to the sky above her. A false yawn splitting her lips until Levi spoke up.
" I think it's best to continue our sickeningly sweet small talk on another day. " Levi commanded gruffly. He pushed himself off the wall and directed his gaze to his boots.
" Understood! " They both nodded in agreement.
" Off to bed, pipsqueaks. " He spared Mikasa a worried blink-and-you’ll-miss-it look before he spun on his heel and made a departure. While Jean didn't seem to catch sight of her uncomfortableness, the Captain had taken notice of it.
Mikasa glanced over at Jean as she stood up. He was standing still and she could just easily make out a disappointed look in his eyes. His apparent interest in her answer to the question left her thoughtful, more thoughtful than she'd ever been in all her years. She carried an imperceptible smirk as she started to walk way from him.
