Gay itself is a sexuality, it's pretty obvious, this sexuality represents sexual/romantic attraction to the same sex, in this case Gay would be Male attraction.
Gay is used for women too, but Female same sex attraction can also be called Lesbian.
Overall, same sex attraction can be called Homosexuality.
The term Gay originally denoted being "carefree", cheerful" or even "bright and showy".
Gay was also used among younger speakers, the word has a ranging from derision:
-rubish
-stupid
to a light-hearted mockery or ridicule:
-weak
-unmanly
-lame
The extent to which these usages still retain connotations of Homosexuality has been debated and harshly criticized.The wprd gay itself arrived in English during the 12th century, which is a while back, coparing to the term Lesbian, from a Old French gai, most likely comin rom a Germanic source.
In english, the word didn't refer to Homosexuality at first, it actually meant:
-Joyful
-Carefree
-Bright and showy
and the word was commonly used in speech and literature.
Only in the 1960's the word Gay was now described as Homosexuality.
